- Critic-Proof: Despite the poor-to-mixed reviews (32% on RT and 44 on Metacritic), the All-Star Cast ensured that the film would gross $138 million worldwide, or triple its budget ($46 million, most of which went to pay said All-Star Cast — Julia Roberts alone was paid $15 million, and Catherine Zeta-Jones another $5 million).
- Hollywood Homely: Played with with Kiki's character, who within the past year, has lost sixty pounds (Julia Roberts wears padding in a flashblack.). Everyone comments on how great she looks now, but Eddie says he never thought she looked bad to begin with. However, she's still supposed to be the dowdy wallflower compared to her glamorous sister, even without the extra sixty pounds.
- Hollywood Pudgy: Julia Roberts dons a fat suit for a flashback. She's mildly pudgy.
- Retroactive Recognition: Rainn Wilson is one of the press reporters interviewing Gwen and Eddie.
- Squick: Hector makes a romantic comment to Gwen that he's going to marry her and "make something out of both our skins." Ew, who are you, Ed Gein?
- Unintentional Period Piece: A perfectly dated line which even appeared in the film's trailer: Gwen comments that she's read "all four Harry Potter books". The fourth book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, was published in 2000; the fifth, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, was published in 2003. Sure enough, this film came out in 2001.
