• Alternate Character Interpretation:
  • It's possible to see Ruby as a Hypocrite since she complains about her job like Josh does. The difference is that one year later, Josh has decided to pursue his dreams of being a writer while Ruby is still designing toys. So it seems that Ruby could be all talk - supported by her surprise that Josh actually listened to her and quit.
  • Josh's offscreen girlfriend Sam is subject to this, since we never get to meet her. On the one hand, Josh defends her when Ruby implies that she doesn't appreciate him - and if they're still together a year later then there clearly has to be something to the relationship. On the other, the fact that she is said to be flirting with several guys in a bar while her boyfriend is outside alone and bored - and the later revelation that her parents don't even know about him - implies that it's a very rocky relationship, and Josh is very eager to show a pretty stranger around the city.
  • Ruby's boyfriend Daniel to a lesser extent. She admittedly doesn't complain about him and has managed to maintain a stable long-term relationship. But then again, they're said to be on and off, and Ruby's comment about his Outlook notification for their Skype call seems as if she's growing tired of the arrangement. Going off the above interpretation, it's possible that Ruby is just sticking to what she's used to. When she calls herself out on what they've been doing, she only says "it's not fair to them", not that she loves her boyfriend or anything like that.
  • Josh also seems to have a bad history with women, judging by the fiancee who cheated on him with his friend. It's possible he may be with Sam despite the relationship's apparent unhealthiness because he thinks he might not get to be with another girl.
• Canon Fodder: Do Ruby and Josh call things off with their respective spouses? The movie ends before we get to see.
• Couple Bomb: Subverted. Jamie Chung and Bryan Greenberg are husband and wife, play the leads and the film was received well enough.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: Jamie Chung playing a character called Ruby will make Once Upon a Time fans chuckle. After this film came out, she returned to the TV show...now as the companion of the character Ruby.
• Just Here for Godzilla: Some viewers have admitted to not being invested in the love story - but still enjoyed the film because of all the Hong Kong scenery.
• Narm: Josh's "I don't speak a lick of Yiddish" speech sounds a bit too forced.
• Narm Charm: Some of Josh's quotes are cheesy but still endearing. Ruby seems to think so too.
• Periphery Demographic: Expats living in Hong Kong like the film for all the familiar sights that get shown off, and cheeky nods to life as a foreigner there.
• Rewatch Bonus: Ruby's dismay at the suit not being ready for another week. She's leaving town next week.
• Tear Jerker: The Heel Realization when the two realize they've been pretty much cheating on their lovers. But what makes it sadder is that even after Ruby outlines a list of reasons why it's wrong, she then asks "does she appreciate your quotes?" - showing that she still desperately wants what they've been doing to be okay.
