YMMV / Alpharad

Go To

  • Awesome Moments: In Jacob's unrehearsed performance of Romeo and Juliet, Anthpo recites damn near half of the famous "to be or not to be" soliloquy during his character, Mercutio's, death scene from unscripted memory alone. Also a funny moment due to coming right out of nowhere.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Based on crowd reactions from the Cup Pong Invitational, John Jacob Rabon III, a.k.a. Alphadad, is beloved by the fandom, not just out of nepotism for being Jacob's dad, but also for being witty, talented, and presentable.
    • From Jacob and Jaiden's Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire charity live stream, thanks to a previous Pokémon stream featuring the two, Altrive, and Rubber Ross, Dr. Bustdown (sic Dr Bustdwn) the Hitmontop garnered a tremendous fan-following for being an overpowered Mon in the race who kept being swapped back and forth between Jacob and Jaiden. Almost all the fans in the live chat mourned Dr. Bustdown when he eventually got released due to bad luck on the release wheel.
    • In Jacob's "Getting Every Character into Elite Smash" video, he came across a player called Ironwill, who mained King K. Rool. While Alpha was in another league in terms of skill, essentially using Ironwill as his "GSP Cow", he played so many matches against him that Jacob and his friends got really attached to him, even lamenting when he left. Later in the video, when they find him for one more game, they end up celebrating, with Alpha dubbing him a legend. Safe to say, the viewers in the comments shared the sentiment.
Alpharad: Can we talk about how this man has an iron will?
Commenter: Ironwill is the guest star that takes the audience 10 minutes to stop clapping.
    • Amanda the Tour Guide from "I Rode EVERY Disneyland Ride in One Day" quickly garnered love from fans for being able to honor Jacob and his friends' request (on top of making bank off of her hourly pay from all ten guests), as well as being an Audience Surrogate who is just as surprised as the viewers about the group's determination. The fact that Amanda was withholding Disney's midnight ride policy from the group for the sake of theatrics just made her all the more deliciously devious to the fans.
    • Baabu the Hoppip is one of the most beloved Pokémon from his Twitch Plays Pokémon video, being seen as a hero in the playthrough. Baabu is mentioned almost every time a Hoppip appears in Jacob's videos.
  • Fandom Rivalry: Jacob has a joking and friendly rivalry with the pro Nuzlocker Jan, aka Pokémon Challenges, as Jan constantly posts reactions of Jacob's Nuzlockes where he critiques his skills and playing ability, while he also admits that Jacob's just funnier and a better script writer than he is. This led to Jacob making videos in response, such as one where he played using Jan's advice to show he was capable and that this play style is boring, and another where he reacted to Jan's reaction of him. The two would eventually do an actual collab together and do a SoulLink Nuzlocke of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, burying the apparent hatchet. The two would also learn from each other after this, as Jacob's skill with Nuzlockes have improved considerably since the start of his rivalry/friendship with Jan, jokingly calling himself "the Nuzlocke King", while Jan's video editing and comedic timing also improved a lot after interacting with Jacob so much.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • He shares many fans with the band Johnny Manchild and the Poor Bastards, as he is a big fan of the group. He recommended the group to his fans, giving them a lot of exposure. He also released a song collaboration with them.
    • Due to the fact that they've collaborated on multiple occasions, sometimes by themselves and sometimes with other people, and have since become best friends and roommates, many viewers of Alpharad also happen to be viewers of JaidenAnimations.
    • Fans of FamilyJules tend to get along with fans of Alpharad, by virtue of the fact that not only has Jules collaborated on Jacob's channel a number of times, but Jacob himself has appeared in quite a few of Jules' covers and gotten to show off his singing voice as a result.
    • There is a large contingency of Vinesauce fans who are also fans of Alpharad. It helps that the two creators have collaborated a few times and Vinny and Jacob have met each other in person.
    • Alpharad shares many fans with Rubber Ross, as the two are friends and have collaborated multiple times.
    • Many of his fans are also fans of Goonya Fighter, as he uploaded a playthrough of the game on Alpharad Gold, in which he really enjoyed playing the game for its So Bad, It's Good qualities yet legitimate charm and fun gameplay. His video is how most people became aware of the game.
    • Due to Jacob being a member of the channel, many of his fans also watch the collaborative Let's Play channel WILD/CARD.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Seeing Jacob pull all nine of his friends in for a Group Hug at the end of "I Rode EVERY Disneyland Ride in One Day" is immensely satisfying, considering they cleared what, by all means, should've been an impossible challenge.
    • The ending of "I went to Japan and Spent too much Money" has Jacob give the huge amount of merchandise he bought in Japan to his friends. His friends are very happy and thankful for the gifts, and it is especially heartwarming how Jacob knew exactly what to get everyone.
    • A minor moment in that same video shows a brief interaction with a kid where the kid pointed to him and called him "san jii-san". He was confused until he later realized he was saying "Sanji-san", realizing it might have been not only been the first time the kid had ever seen a blonde person before, but also someone who looked remotely close to the character.
  • He Panned It, Now He Sucks!: His Pokémon Scarlet and Violet playthrough got a lot of flack from commenters regarding his reactions to the Starfall Street storyline, as his decision to skip through the dialogue meant he ended up getting the exact opposite interpretation of the characters than he was supposed to.Explanation (SPOILERS) It got to the point that Jacob ended up posting an apology in the comments of the video that covered the Starfall Street finale.
"i am sorry for not reading and it will happen again"
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In his first "Clickbait" video, he created a clickbait thumbnail claiming to show leaks for the final evolutions of the Pokémon Sun and Moon starters. The image he chose to represent Litten's final evolution was a red Tony the Tiger, which looks rather similar to its actual final evolution, Incineroar.
    • He posted a picture on Twitter of Daisy Ridley, captioned with "two characters who won’t ever be in Smash". Just hours later, both Daisy and Ridley were revealed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
  • Memetic Loser: Braden/Captain Kidd, despite being a very competent PokéTuber on his own channel, lives on in infamy on Jacob's channel as his one friend who constantly gives bad advice, being responsible in particular for the infamous Onix incident.
  • Misaimed Fandom: "I went to Japan and Spent too much Money" initially attracted controversy on Twitter when it was first released, as people accused Jacob of flaunting his wealth. However, this was a misrepresentation of the video itself in two ways. One, the entire video has Jacob self-deprecating himself for being an impulse buyer, and two, a majority of what he bought in Japan was meant as gifts for his friends, as shown in The Stinger.
  • Never Live It Down: Getting his Onix killed in his first-ever Pokémon Nuzlocke thanks to a friend's poor advice. It's guaranteed to come up again pretty much every time he does a Nuzlocke (with Jaiden even animating the moment during her SoulLink Nuzlocke with him). It's also this for Braden/Captain Kidd, the friend in question, who can't escape the infamy of something going wrong involving an Onix.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Initially, Jacob wanted to show how outdated the ethnic representation on "it's a small world" is, but the actual footage in "I Rode EVERY Disneyland Ride in One Day" opted to instead focus on the Unintentional Uncanny Valley it provides, complete with a minor key remix of the song courtesy of FamilyJules.
  • Play-Along Meme: Although the clip channel Not Alpharad is run by Jacob, many fans jokingly treat Alpharad and Not Alpharad as two different people. Eventually became a Discredited Meme when the channel was rebranded into Alpharad LIVE.
  • Ron the Death Eater: His portrayal of Team Star and Penny in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is much more negative than in canon. Canonically, they are Jerkass Woobies who were all victims of bullying. Due to ignoring much of the dialogue, Jacob presents them as whiny, spoiled rich kids who deserve harsh punishment.
  • Tear Jerker: The Sabrina battle in his first Nuzlocke. After her Alakazam reached +3 in Special Attack and Special Defence through using Calm Mind, Alpharad lost four of his six mons to take it down, only surviving thanks to a Heroic Sacrifice from Fyrus the Lapras and its Perish Song. The use of Don't Ever Forget really sells it.
