YMMV / Alone in the Dark (2005)

  • Awesome Music: The soundtrack is a surprisingly decent collection of heavy metal artists. There is also Youssou N'Dour and Neneh Cherry's gorgeous duet "7 Seconds"... which is sadly used completely inappropriately in the film.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The sex scene between Aline and Carnby comes out of nowhere and has no relevance to anything that happens before or after it. On top of that, it's scored to the song "7 Seconds" by Neneh Cherry, a song about racism and world issues.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The 713 sergeant, Miles, who comes across as the only competent character in the entire film and is significantly better-acted than most of the main cast (although that's not saying much). Sadly, he doesn't last long, although he does outlive literally everyone else in his unit.
  • Narm:
    • The Opening Scroll goes on for so long that it almost becomes an unintentional Overly Long Gag.
    • As Seanbaby pointed out, we get a heaping helping of Narm when a minor character named Marco falls into a trap:
''They must not have the same swimming pool games in Germany, but over here, the tension in a horror scene dies when the actors start screaming "Marco!"
  • Nightmare Retardant:
  • Questionable Casting:
    • Tara Reid (best known for being a wild-partying actress) as an archaeologist.
    • The direct-to-video sequel casts Rick Yune (who has Korean ancestry), of all people, as the Caucasian Edward Carnby.
  • Strangled by the Red String: The forced relationship between Carnby and Aline. It wasn't there in The New Nightmare, on which the film is loosely based.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: While not great, the Direct to Video sequel (which Boll produced, but didn't direct) is a definite improvement over the first.
  • Video Game Movies Suck: Arguably the foremost example of all time; it has the lowest RT score of Uwe Boll's films and possibly the lowest RT score for any video game-based film.
