- Complete Monster: Pepi is a Nazi fifth columnist and murderer who kills several people to cover up the plots of his group. Knowing the Nazi concentration camps' truth, Pepi fully intends to facilitate a Nazi invasion in the United States by bombing a battleship and starting a deadly riot, only balking when his superior decides to make it a suicide run.
- Heartwarming Moments: Gloves may be a "promoter", but he always makes time for his mother whenever she calls him and asks for his help. He even makes it a point to send her flowers at random times during the day, just to be nice.
- Ho Yay: "I just took a quick tour through your tunnel of love." And the look Ebbing gives Gloves after, plus the ensuing conversation. Extra potent considering the real-life bisexual Conrad Veidt was the biggest gay icon of 1920s Berlin (which, to be fair, Bogie probably didn't know about).
- Retroactive Recognition: Jackie Gleason and Phil Silvers have minor roles in the film, well before they would gain fame in The Honeymooners and The Phil Silvers Show respectively.
- Special Effects Failure: The boat rigged with explosives is obviously a toy in some shots.
