• Awesome Music:
  • "First Time He Kissed A Boy", by Kadie Elder. A very to the face, but still interesting and lovely song to start the movie.
  • "I Know a Place" by MUNA is a quite awesome track that plays over Elliot and Alex's "date" in Manhattan.
• Genius Bonus: In the beginning of the movie, Alex compares himself to a penguin in terms of relationships and mating habits because "he is a romantic." Penguins are one of many animal groups known for engaging in same-sex behaviors.
• TearJerker: Alex's flashback to getting bullied and called names as a child for getting an erection around other boys.
• They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: A lot of viewers agree that the role of Elliot was not used to its character's — or, for that matter, its actor's — full power. While some agree that the movie is much more about Alex coming to terms with his sexuality than who he ends up with, it's still jarring how Elliot vanishes midway through the movie and only shows up for the ending.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: A problem of the movie to some viewers is that Alex comes across as unlikable and obnoxious, due to his tendency to throw his anger in his girlfriend, mancrush and family's faces when he feels overwhelmed.
