- Ensemble Dark Horse: King Gruesome/Gyu-Mao is this for many people. Primarily due to being the basis for Bowser in the Super Mario Bros. franchise.
- Fair for Its Day: The US dub changed a lot, including changing the names of nearly every character and removing every reference to Buddhism. If a modern company had done this, it would be considered a Macekre, but it was 1961 and nobody was sure that an anime could succeed in an American market.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: This was the first time Toei made an anime adaptation of a manga based on Journey to the West. It certainly wouldn't be the last.
