  • Broken Base: The fact that any race, class, and alignment combination is possible in the game is this. Most fans of the game enjoy the amount of freedom it offers and find it to be a welcome break from tropes like Always Chaotic Evil and Always Lawful Good. Others complain that the ability for any race to choose any class and alignment reduces the uniqueness of the races and allows for combinations that don't "fit" thematically.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • In general, any unit which can disable an enemy, such as the Apprentice's stun bolts, the Druid's entangling touch, or the Ice Scaper's snowballs. Disabled foes cannot take actions or retaliate, and take full flanking damage from any attack, enabling even otherwise weak units to very quickly wear down almost any opponent. Unlike mind-control powers, disabling powers can be of a variety of different elements and there is no equivalent to the "Immune to Mind Control" trait, so no enemy is completely immune to being disabled.
    • Multi-element attacks. As damage penalties from long range, line of sight or armor/resistance cannot reduce incoming damage below 1, and each damage type is calculated separately, having even a slight amount of another element will raise an attack's minimum damage output. Attacks like Bane Fire or Fairy Fire, which deal damage in three channels by default, can easily shred the flanks of weaker units.
  • Goddamn Bats: Mob spawners and the wandering armies that emerge from them are the bane of undefended cities, isolated castles, and lone scouts/settlers/builders. They love to rush in from just beyond your field of vision the moment you let your guard down, forcing you to chase them about the map and root out every spawner on the borders of your territory. The stacks of ghosts that spawn from necromantic circles are particularly annoying, as they can float through mountains and across rivers to attack from unexpected angles. Haunted boneyards, meanwhile, verge on outright Demonic Spiders due to their potential to spawn stacks of tier 4 bone dragons.
  • Iron Woobie: Camille Moonflower from the Golden Realms expansion. Her first home was destroyed and her family killed. When she participated in the leadership contest, her second home was destroyed by nagas. No wonder she sought revenge.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: The quick flourish that plays when a unit scores a Critical Hit, especially when the attack would've normally been neutered to Scratch Damage by various penalties.
