YMMV / Afterlife (1996)

  • Awesome Music: The soundtrack is full of appropriately ethereal music, along with an upside to the "Surfers of the Apocalypso" - you're losing, but at least there's a cool surf rock tune playing!
  • Fridge Horror: At first, Sticky’s, one of the lesser gluttony punishments, seems more like a Cool and Unusual Punishment. They have normal food items on the menu, but only “sticky” stuff like peanut butter sandwiches and pancakes drowned in syrup, along with there being nothing to drink. It’s awful, but at least you’re not getting your innards burned at Taco Inferno, right? Well, take a closer look at the description. It says verbatim, they don’t believe in flypaper. Why would that be outright said if it wasn’t important? Is Sticky’s a modern form of scaphism in disguise?
  • Harsher in Hindsight: One of the punishments for Wrathful sinners? Terrorville, a world that experiences terrorist attacks nonstop. The picture of this particular punishment is a tall building on fire.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • "Sim Sim Sim Sim Sim Sim Sim Sim Sim Sim Sim" is a reward structure where the blessed soul can control an entire galaxy from the smallest microbe to the largest space races. The building is a hand holding a orb containing a spiral galaxy. Does this remind you of anything?
    • "The Bowels of Hell" involves gluttonous damned SOULs being forced into what is basically a Human Centipede.
  • Quirky Work: Lead designer Michael Stemmle admitted that his idea only flew because Lucasarts was "a rather experimental studio at the time", leading him to go "whole hog goofy" and make the game filled to the brim with wacky descriptions and structures, all of them described in a Hurricane of Puns. No surprise that in spite of being a small project, it still didn't turn a profit.
  • Retroactive Recognition: The doctor's voice in the introductory movie. If you listen very carefully, he sounds like a rather popular space cowboy.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Hell's road system. You're punished for souls reaching their punishment TOO efficiently, but what the game defines as sufficiently inefficient is vague at best. As a result, expect Jasper to constantly harp at you about the roads.
  • Ugly Cute: The EMBOs, which are spindly aliens with leathered skin, long faces and cartoonishly big eyes. Looking at Aria and Jasper, it seems that angels and demons both keep some of these features, though Aria has human skin and hair and is more conventionally beautiful.
