- Awesome Music: The main strength of this opera is in its music.
- Cliché Storm: So many cliches are used here. The rivalry between Adriana and the Princess is a standard soprano vs. mezzo fight over the tenor, like in Verdi's Aida and many others, and the Act IV finale might as well be out of Verdi's La traviata.
- Ham and Cheese: The title role and the Princess de Bouillon are both very hammy roles, and if there's no proper acting talent, it can become very cheesy.
- Moral Event Horizon: The Princess de Bouillon crosses this when she poisons Adriana with the violets she gave to Maurizio.
- Narm Charm: Sir David McVicar's production embraces the more silly aspects of this opera, turning it into a tragicomedy that can be appreciated for its drama and melodies.
