• Harsher in Hindsight: Vicki Lester is a hopeful actress who became a superstar after her husband's death. Janet Gaynor's film career ended shortly after the film. (Although that was largely Janet Gaynor's decision, as the film was a huge hit that revived her career in a big way.)
• Tear Jerker: After her husband's suicide, the people attending his funeral, instead of comforting Esther, demand she lift her veil just so they can see her. They also insult Norman!
