• Aluminum Christmas Trees: Many readers were surprised that certain creatures introduced, like the Knockers, the Clurichauns and, perhaps most egregiously, the Tree Geese are cryptids with actual basis in mythology.
• Anticlimax Boss:
  • The main antagonist of Episode 2 is LORD FOO QWALL, a sentient AI who tries to escape the virtual world of the videogame Bloodcraft: Overdeath, in order to take a physical presence in the real world. It's presented as a dangerous foe, to the point it reminds the heroes of Bill Cipher himself. It even actually succeeds. However, it turns out the only way code can take a physical presence in the real world is printed code. So LORD FOO QWALL ends up being a Self-Disposing Villain.
  • Preston Northwest proves to be a surprisingly competent foe in Episode 3, when he uses the Boring, but Practical strategy of eliminating the Pines by bringing associates from big business companies to take control of Gravity Falls' economy and buying the Mystery Shack through ruthless business practices. He actually even wins. However, the Darkest Hour doesn't last, and the heroes quickly take back the Shack by gathering a bunch of Gravity Falls' creatures, and attacking Preston and his associates who give up after a very one-sided fight.
