YMMV / A Murder Is Announced

Go To

  • Jerkass Woobie: Discussed and defied with regards to Charlotte Blacklock. On the one hand, she certainly didn't have an easy life, what with her Abusive Parents and goiter scar. On the other hand, it certainly didn't justify her murders and fraud. Miss Marple reflects that there are plenty of other people with a Dark and Troubled Past who nevertheless live perfectly functional lives; Charlotte chose to murder just as she chose to let the bad things in her life embitter her. She says that some of the most dangerous people are the ones who feel that the world owes them.
  • Les Yay: The Misses Hinchcliffe and Murgatroyd. They live together, Hinch looks and acts like a man and dislikes men, and she's devastated when Murgatroyd is killed. The neighbors are also adamant that Hinch would not hurt Murgatroyd, period. Different adaptations play it up to different extents.
  • Values Dissonance: Basically all the characters agree that anyone not from England is a Funny Foreigner at best or a shifty, lying criminal at worst. Additionally, all the things about Mitzi that are Played for Laughs don't seem funny at all to modern readers (for example, she essentially spends the book having a nervous breakdown—understandable, because her family members were murdered by the Nazis and now someone unknown is knocking off people left and right—but this is played as amusingly dramatic, rather than sympathetic).
