YMMV / A Low Down Dirty Shame

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The scene with Peaches confronting an actor from a soap opera she's watching has nothing to do with anything, but it is damned funny in spite of that.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Peaches' flippant comment that "Muhammad Ali can't even spell Muhammad Ali!" This likely wasn't intended to sound as harsh as it might to someone who knows he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 1984, but it can come across as a cruel line depending on the viewer.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Given Jada Pinkett Smith's marital problems that specifically deal with infidelity on her part, it is a bit hard looking back at this film where she is clearly jealous of another woman having the eye of the man she's falling in love with.
  • Memetic Mutation: For a while on Tiktok and Instagram, the clip of Peaches telling her friend what just happened in the soap opera they're both watching ("And then BAM! He got hit by a big ass truck!") was used for people telling their indoor cats what would happen if they went outside.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Some folks might be wondering why Angela sounds so familiar. Well, if you've ever seen Gargoyles, that's why—she voices the detective Elisa Maza in that show.
  • Signature Scene: More than likely, if anyone's heard of the film, it's probably referencing what most people considered one of the funniest lines. Peaches asks Shame why he's never asked her out on a date and he says they have nothing in common. Peaches starts listing things they do have in common, so Shame then asks her who's the best boxer of all time, to which she responds Mike Tyson. The signature scene comes from the following exchange:
Shame: Mike Tyson over Muhammad Ali?! Mike Tyson can't even spell Muhammad Ali!
Peaches: (offended) Uh-uh, wait a minute! Muhammad Ali can't even spell Muhammad Ali!
  • Values Dissonance: Naturally, the film's portrayal of gay men is rather offensive by today's standards. It's all done in good fun, but it's definitely punching down on them and the only slight saving grace is that Shame still saves Wayman's life even though he's a homophobe.
