• Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Porter really run away with Addie, or did he just say that to make Deborah feel better? We never find out what really happened to Brad, and the exchange between Porter and George at the end does suggest Porter's lying somewhat.^note Famously, Douglas MacArthur was confused enough by the end that he had his aide write Joseph L. Mankiewicz to find out who it was Addie really ran off with. Mankiewicz would later admit he wished he had made it clearer Porter was telling the truth.
• Award Snub: Though the movie was nominated for three Oscars, winning two (Best Screenplay and Best Director for Joseph L. Mankiewicz - a feat he'd accomplish again the following year for All About Eve) - while losing Best Picture to All the King's Men - none of the actors received nominations.
• One-Scene Wonder: Thelma Ritter, as usual, steals all of her scenes playing Sadie, the maid to Rita and George, and friend of Lora Mae and her family.
