YMMV / A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Is The Girl really a good force or is she simply along the lines of Black-and-Gray Morality? Two occasions wherein she bullies the Urchin just to take his skateboard and then kills a homeless man just for food seem to support this theory.
    • Alternatively, the homeless man whom the Girl kills: was he innocent as he seems, or did he do something in the past that we do not get to see but the girl witnessed? We know that when the Girl threatened the Urchin, she said that she would be watching him for as long as he lived. And was The Girl threatening the Urchin meant to be cruel or was she trying to scare him straight, so he doesn't become bad like most of her other targets?
  • Awesome Music: The much praised soundtrack is a emboldening mix of Arab rock and Morricone-esque Western tracks.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Hossien crosses it when he drugs Atti despite her protests.
    • One could interpret the Girl murdering a homeless man and then threatening the Urchin as this.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Not since Persepolis has a story found the effective terror of a woman in a chador.
  • One-Scene Wonder: The Cat, while in the film previously but sparingly and important to the plot, is widely regarded by fans and the director as making the final scene of the film.
  • Paranoia Fuel: The Girl watches everyone in the town at night. Let that sink in.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Saeed is Kasius.
  • The Woobie:
    • Arash is pretty much a damaged character. His father is a drug addict, his mom is dead, he lives in a pretty suckish town, and his love interest earlier in the film flat out rejects him, and his second love interest is a vampire.
    • Atti. It's safe to assume she never wanted to be a prostitute, but it seems like she has to do it just to get enough money to leave town.
