Boston Strong Style
Michael Bennett (born May 16, 1985) is an American professional wrestler, currently competing for All Elite Wrestling and Ring of Honor as Mike Bennett. He's also known for competing for New Japan Pro-Wrestling, Chikara, Impact Wrestling and National Wrestling Alliance. He also competed in WWE as Mike Kanellis.

He made his debut in 2002 in the independent circuit and competed mainly for New England Championship Wrestling, Northeast Wrestling and Top Rope Promtions. In 2008, joined Ring Of Honor, but it's not until January 10, 2010, when he made his televised first appearance for the company defeating Nick Dinsmore. Nicknamed as "The Prodigy" and accompanied by his trainer "Brutal" Bob Evans, he won the Top Prospect Tournament in 2011 after defeating Kyle O'Reilly in the finals.

During his first run with the company, he and Maria Kanellis started a relationship together, which later became the basis of his gimmick. After failing to get both Television and World Heavyweight Championship title shots, he turned on his own mentor Bob Evans and declared that "The Prodigy is dead.". He and Maria later joined The Kingdom, with Adam Cole and Matt Hardy. Later on, when Matt Hardy already left, Matt Taven joined the stable and he and his newfound partner won the ROH Tag Team Championship for the first time, and also won the IWGP Tag Team Championship through ROH's partnership with NJPW. Unfortunately, after losing the titles, he and Maria left the company when they failed to negotiate with a new contract in 2015.

On January 5, 2016, Bennett, accompanied by Kannellis, joined TNA with another gimmick: "The Miracle", proclaiming himself as "Professional Wrestling's Jesus". Bennett got his first victory by defeating Robbie E in One Night Only: Live, then, he feuded against the likes of Kurt Angle, Ethan Carter III, Lashley and Moose during his run with the Nashville-based promotion, and won the TNA X-Division Championship against Eddie Edwards. He also competed with Maria in an intergender tag team match against Cody and Brandi Rhodes. After being convinced by Kevin Owens to join WWE, he and Maria left TNA on March 1, 2017.

On April 18, 2017, Bennett signed with WWE, making his official debut with the company as Mike Kannellis at the 2017 edition of Money in the Bank alongside with his now wife Maria in a Power of Love gimmick. He only competed four times in WWE SmackDown due to him being sidelined for rehabilitation and Maria getting pregnant with their first child at the same time. He moved to WWE Raw at the 2018 WWE Superstar Shake-Up, and competed in the 50-Man Greatest Royal Rumble Match in Saudi Arabia, but was quickly eliminated by Mark Henry. During his time in Raw, he didn't win a singles match. Later, he competed in WWE 205 Live and on October 28, 2018, he was present ringside in the WWE Evolution PPV where his wife Maria competed in a Battle Royal, but she was eliminated by the eventual winner Nia Jax. His losing streak in WWE ended when he defeated Akira Tozawa, with Maria's help.

In his last years with the company, he was involved in an angle where Maria, legitimately pregnant for the second time, berates him for not being a real man and that he's not the father of their child. Within the angle, he won the 24/7 Championship by pinning multi-time champion R-Truth in a dogpile during a Mosh Pit mixed tag team match featuring Truth and Carmella against Drake Maverick and the latter's real life wife, Renee Michelle, but lost at the hands of his own wife when she forced him to lie down. He won the 24/7 Championship again when he hug Maria during her OB-GYN appointment without being noticed by the referee doing the count out, only for him to lose again by R-Truth, disguised as a pregnant woman. His last match for WWE took place in the February 14, 2020 episode of 205 Live, teaming with Tony Nese to defeat Ariya Daivari and The Brian Kendrick, before getting released alongside with his wife Maria due to budget cuts related to the COVID-19 pandemic on April 15, 2020. According to Maria, a Face turn was planned for the couple in WWE where he ended up being the father of their second child all along.

After being released from WWE due to budget cuts, he struggled with drug addicitons, but fortunately, he got rehabilitated again and since then, he remains healthy and in good shape. To prove it, he competed against Nick Aldis for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship in Prime Time Live, but lost, although he gained the respect of the National Treasure himself after the match.

On November 21, 2020, he returned to Ring of Honor, this time as a Face when he saved his tag team partner and best friend Matt Taven from the attacks of the Righteous (led by his real life student Vincent) reforming The Kingdom in the process, now known as The OGK. Bennett and Taven won the ROH Tag Team Championship for the second time before losing to The Briscoes in Final Battle 2021 in an impressive match for both teams, showcasing his "Boston Strong Style" skills. ROH released him from the contract but remained with the company until December 31, 2021.

When not competing in wrestling matches, he can be seen in motivational seminars or occasionally streaming in Twitch.

Bennett returns to TNA, now called Impact Wrestling, and in a surprising turn of events, he, alongside with Taven, Vincent, PCO and Maria, started invading the Impact Zone by attacking the winners of the 10-Man Hardcore War in Hard to Kill 2022 between Team Impact and Violent By Design, forming the stable of ROH renegades known as Honor No More. Eight months later after his return, he and Taven won the Impact Tag Team Championship against The Good Brothers, before losing to Heath and Rhino at the October 8, 2022 episode of Impact Wrestling. He and Taven got fired from Impact after PCO turned on Honor No More, dismantling it in the process.

On October 14, 2022, Bennett, alongside with Maria Kanellis and Matt Taven, joins AEW, challenging FTR for the ROH World Tag Team Championship.

Tropes of Prodigy, Miracle, Love and Strong Style:

  • Arch-Enemy: Karl Anderson earned his ire after flirting with his wife Maria. The first time took place in NJPW, and the next time in Impact Wrestling during the Honor No More VS Bullet Club Enemy Civil War.
    • First ROH Run: Steve Corino, Jay Lethal, Kevin Steen, The Briscoes.
    • First TNA Run: Ethan Carter III, Moose, Cody Rhodes, Lashley.
    • WWE Run: Sami Zayn.
    • Second ROH Run: Vincent, his own real-lfe student, and The Righteous to an extent. Brian Milonas and Beer City Bruiser, La Facción Ingobernable.
    • NWA: The Fixers, La Rebelión.
    • AEW: FTR, Wardlow, Samoa Joe.
    • Current ROH Run: Top Flight (Dante and Darius Martin)
  • Battle Couple: With Maria Kanellis in both ROH and TNA/Impact.
  • Berserk Button: He doesn't take it kindly when someone flirts to his wife in front of him. This is best exemplified when Karl Anderson says "Hi, Maria!".
  • Big Damn Heroes: The very first thing Bennett did when he returned to ROH in his second run is saving his tag team partner and best friend Matt Taven, who already turned Face, from the attacks of The Righteous.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Debuted in WWE with his returning wife Maria to much fanfare. Had a short program with Sami Zayn and then quickly disappeared, implicitly due to some personal issues and/or injuries. Then Maria got pregnant again and Mike hasn't really been seen much if at all since, at least until he shortly returned in 205 Live for one last match before getting fired from WWE in 2020.
  • Crippling the Competition: Tried to break Mark Briscoe's leg with two chairs. When that didn't work he tried to break Mark's head...
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Downplayed in WWE. Maria isn't physically abusive (at least on camera), but she is as emotionally/verbally abusive as someone can be, and it's generally Played for Laughs. When men in WWE treat their kayfabe wives/girlfriends the way Maria treats Mike, it's always portrayed as deplorable.
  • Expy: In his first ROH and TNA runs, he was one to CM Punk: An egotistical man who fancies himself a revolutionary and savior and pretty much hates the company leadership when he can't get his way. It helps that he even sounds like CM Punk too unless he's shouting, and that his wife and cohort is a former girlfriend of Punk's. That said, he's also a Shadow Archetype of Punk since his revolution has never gone Babyface or appeared genuine in favor of anyone but himself (and his wife) at any point in time.
  • Finishing Move: A samoan driver named "Divine Intervention" in ROH and the indies, "MIP - Miracle in Progress" in his first TNA/Impact run and "The Power of Love" in WWE.
  • Heel–Face Return: Returned to ROH in 2020 to save his tag team partner Matt Taven (the latter also turned Face at the time) from the attacks of The Righteous. He remains as a Face only in NWA as he's now back as a Heel in his second Impact Wrestling run.
  • Henpecked Husband: Textbook example for his WWE run. Maria regularly berates him on national TV, orders him around, yells at him, and insults his manhood over the most minor transgressions.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Matt Taven.
  • Jerkass: As a Heel, especially in his first ROH and TNA/Impact runs. He's insufferable to anyone he meets.
  • Over-the-Shoulder Carry: To guest referee "Elizabeth" after she accepted Machismo King's marriage proposal at "A Night Of Hoopla".
  • Pet the Dog: Refused to let Maria use herself as a shield against Mark Briscoe. Of course, he had no problem with her interfering with their match in other ways...
  • Power Trio:
    • He and Taven teamed up with "Savage Gentleman" Victor Benjamin as The Savage Kingdom in NWA. It only lasted a few months because Benjamin ended his duties with the promotion.
    • Representing both Honor No More and the state of Boston in Impact, he frequently teams up with fellow stablemates Matt Taven and Eddie Edwards.
  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: He fell dissapointed when Vinny Marseglia, now known as Vincent, whom he trained personally, attacked Matt Taven in late 2019, and as a result, he came to defend his friend's newfound honor in his ROH return.
  • Recovered Addict: After being fired from WWE in 2020, Bennett struggled with a severe drug addiction, but eventually he realized that if he continued, he would end his own life, and instead, he rehabilitated again, this time for good. Since then, Bennett returned to wrestling with full motivation, which became the basis of his "Boston Strong Style" mantra from now on.
  • Red Baron: "The Prodigy" in ROH, then "The Miracle" in his first TNA run. Currently, he's called "Mr. Motivation".
  • Signature Move: A rolling forearm and a Spear.
  • Serious Business: The main reason why he no longer posts in Kayfabe in Twitter. He wants to be remembered as a professional wrestler instead of a "Sports Entertainer" after his WWE run ended in dissapointment for him.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: As a Heel, he thinks of himself as the "Jesus of professional wrestling" and is absolutely insufferable.
  • So Last Season: He liked to use the spots CM Punk used to do during his ROH tenure... it didn't endear him to crowds very much (they were chanting "CM Punk" because of Maria's association with him and Bennett just ran with it).
  • Spiteful Spit: Spit water at Mark Briscoe at Super Card of Honor VIII.
  • Strong and Skilled: Took a serious training regime after his rehabilitation, and as a result, he now competes in the "Boston Strong Style" of wrestling.
  • Take That!: He calls his Anaconda Vice "Go Back to Japan". The move was innovated by Hiroyoshi Tenzan, a Japanese man. Might be a twofer since it was popularized in the U.S. by CM Punk, who used to date Bennett's wife Maria, and whose other Finishing Move is called "Go to Sleep" (and is also another Japanese move, innovated by Kenta Kobayashi).
  • Technician vs. Performer: He's the Technician to Matt Taven's Performer. Bennett is a hard hitting brawler capable of resisting enough chops, and it shows each time he trains on the gym.
  • The Bus Came Back: Two times! For his ROH return, he returned as a Face, teaming up with his friend Matt Taven to reform The Kingdom, now known as The OGK, until December 31, 2021, and in Impact, he returns back as a Heel alongside with his wife Maria, the aforementioned Taven, and fellow former ROH stars Vincent and PCO to form Honor No More.
  • Took the Wife's Name: He is given his wife's surname in WWE, which plays to his Henpecked Husband status.
  • The Rival: In ROH against Kevin Steen revolving around piledrivers. Bennett was banned from doing them after losing in a stretcher match to Steen. In TNA, Ethan Carter III, as they gave each other their first pinfall losses, and they both are ambitiously after Lashley and the world title.
    • The Briscoes, for both Bennett and Taven, to the point of seeing them as Worthy Opponents in Final Battle 2021.
  • True Companions: Eventually, Bennett and Taven remained loyal to each other.
  • Trust Password: After winning the 24/7 Championship on the July 27, 2019 episode of Raw, he hides behind a locked door backstage from the mob of superstars attempting to challenge for the title. When Maria implores them to let her see him, they clear out, but Mike thinks it's a trick by Carmella.
Maria: [violently knocks on door] Michael, you let me in!
    Mike: Go away!
    Mike: Who is it?!
    Maria: It's your wife, Maria!
Mike: How do I know it's not Carmella pretending to be my wife?!
Maria: Because if you don't let me in right now, I am going to knock down this door and kick you in your vagina!
    Mike: [meekly opens door]
  • The Worf Effect: Had been in ROH dark matches until the 2008 Proving Ground, where his defeat of Rhett Titus awarded him with a chance to show what he could do on camera. He was squashed by Daniel Puder in 26 seconds. This squash was seemingly so devastating (or his Proving Ground performances so underwhelming) that Bennett wouldn't be seen in ROH again for another two years.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: For his second ROH return, he's now kinder than he was in his first run, and on top of that, he gets motivated to win matches with honor.
