General
- All the guys have their moments when you just want to hug them like Simmons in Season 4 and 9, Tucker in Season 11 and 12, and Grif when he's being shot at. Even Sarge has a moment of this when he discovers that his career is a lie and both teams exist as cannon fodder.
- Due to his childlike personality, Caboose gets a lot of sympathy for suffering that the show generally inflicts on its characters. Especially after Reconstruction, where he was left alone without his "best friend" Church to look up to or his comrade Tucker. Then come the end of Season 8 and he loses his best friend all over again. Then there's Season 13's ending, which has pretty much solidified him as this. Then came Season 15, when Temple shoves his hope for Church's resurrection into the dirt.
- Church from has gone from Chew Toy in Blood Gulch Chronicles to either this or an Iron Woobie in later seasons, due to the tonal shift of the series. As Alpha, he's tortured with endless scenarios in which everyone he cares about dies and he can't do anything to help, so he splits off all the different facets of his personality into other A.I.s in order to cope. Then, with no memory of this, he's quietly stuffed in a useless backwater canyon where no one ever goes, gets "killed" by his own teammate, loses the woman he loves, and gets killed (for real this time) while stopping the Big Bad. Then, as Epsilon, he meets the woman he loves (rebooted), gets betrayed by her just so she can face-off with the Big Bad, loses her again, gets trapped inside his own memories in a desperate attempt to find her, meets her again, finally realizes he has to let her go in order to be at peace, then gets ripped out of his memories and back into the real world just as he comes to terms with all of his problems. And on top of all that, he finds he's been replaced in his friends' lives by the series' other Iron Woobie, Agent Washington.
- Flashbacks show Wash as a (somewhat uptight but) generally nice, slightly naive guy. Unfortunately, he's been so beat up, shoved around, betrayed and generally stomped on (usually by his own former partners) that in the present he's a humorless, sarcastic Anti-Hero who readily commits his own betrayals if he thinks it'll secure him some peace for once. If Command has a keyboard shortcut for Caboose's team kills, they've also got one for Washington being shot in the back.
- Pretty much anyone from Project Freelancer could be summed up the same way (And most didn't get a happy ending).
- Doc, despite being one of the nicest characters in the series, is constantly bad mouthed and tossed aside by the others, due to his lack medical know how and by the second half of season two, is possessed by the malevolent A.I. Omega/O'Mally who uses him as vessel to perform his evil deeds, until Omega is finally destroyed later in the series. Then come season 11 and Doc is accidentally transported into a void and the others don't even care or even notice he's gone for a good chunk of "The Chorus Trilogy". Then after being released, Tucker reveals without a hint of remorse, that they didn't even notice he was gone and brushes the whole thing off, causing Doc to finally snap and Omega to reemerge as a split personality, before giving a long No-Holds-Barred Beatdown to Tucker.
Season 15
- Grif is seen as this by many after he (temporarily) quits, while implying that he may have PTSD from all his adventures.
- Simmons is very depressed now that Grif is gone. He turns around to joke with him only to find him gone, and seems very upset that Grif said he doesn't like him despite them being friends for years.
- Sarge officially becomes this, after it is revealed that he is afraid of not knowing who he is anymore, and that is why he is constantly trying to create conflicts to fight. He only sees himself as an army man now, and is desperate to return to the chain of command, making it all the easier for Temple to control him. And while he won't it admit by a long shot, even he misses Grif. Though he does veer more towards the Jerkass side after he fully betrays the BGC just so he can be involved in Temple's war against the UNSC. Thankfully, however, that was pretty short-lived.
- Caboose is this for much of this season. He honestly believed that Church was still alive until Temple very cruelly spells it out that Church is dead for good, and will never come back. He laments that he never got to say goodbye to Church or thank for being his friend, with Tucker trying his best to counsel him. Thankfully, by the end, he's able to say goodbye to Church in the past, and is able to move on definitively.
- Loco, the Caboose of the Blues and Reds. He genuinely likes the Reds and Blues, Episode 9 hints that his dad left him, Episode 14 reveals that he was raised by wolves, and just like Caboose with Church, Loco aspires to be Temple's best friend, unaware that Temple cares very little for him. Moreso, Episode 16 shows that Loco truly enjoyed his time with Caboose, as he shows absolute regret for his role in editing Church's distress call upon seeing how much it upset Caboose. Then in episode 20, he was accidentally shot by Temple during the struggle with the Reds and Blues, and died not long after. And Temple didn't give a damn.
- Biff. The man joined the army with his best friend Temple, only for the UNSC to hand them over to Project Freelancer to be used as walking test dummies for the Freelancers. Temple is forced on the opposite team, which means he has to shoot at his best friend with loaded weapons. Though he tries to make the most of it, hanging out with Temple every night, it's clear that he just wants to go home and see his girlfriend, who he learns is pregnant with his son. After finally getting a plan together to get back home to her (have Temple shoot off his pinkie), he's brutally impaled at the end of a flagpole. He spends his last moments clinging to the hope he'll be sent home. Is it any wonder Temple wants to avenge him?
