What The Hell Hero / Descensus Averno

Go To

Descensus Averno

There is a lot of this involved throughout the story as the flaws of the Shogun Insurgency, The strongest resistance against Aether's tyranny, start to unravel and emotions run high in a world that has been all but torn apart by Aether for everyone involved.

  • Diluc snidely asks where Lumine has been the entire time her brother was brutally overtaking all of Teyvat.
  • Eula also sarcastically wonders where the long lost sister of the tyrant has been when Lumine meets with the Insurgency for the first time.
  • Lumine lays into Mavey over the fact that he had completely blown his cover to the civilian Xingqiu when they were infiltrating Liyue.
  • Lumine rips Veer a new one after one too many snide comments from him after he angrily reveals that Aether was the one responsible for the executions of his family. She completely tears into him for taking out his hatred and anger towards Aether out onto her when she has had nothing to do with his choices and that she does not condone his actions at all.
    • In the same chapter, Mavey gives one to Veer after having had enough of the latter constantly picking a fight with Lumine over the fact that she is the twin sister of the The Chāoyuè Xīngchén, the one who is not only ruling Teyvat with an iron fist but also killed his family.
  • Lumine chews out the Committee in regards to their initial and current handling of Albedo and their decision to remove Kris, a competent fighter and commander, from the Insurgency entirely because the latter is unafraid of criticizing them. The both of them are powerful and capable fighters and in a war against her powerful brother who brought even the Archons to their knees, they cannot afford to lose a single warrior. Especially to poor handling and petty infighting.
  • In Chapter 40 when Keqing is with the son of one of the vandals who graffitied the original Insurgency meeting room, the mother, Vivian, storms over to her son and demands why the hell he is with one of the leaders of the Committee.
    • Her son, Kendrick, in return retaliates and asks her just what does she think vandalizing the Insurgency Meeting room would do for her? It would not bring back his dad and he would be utterly disappointed in his wife’s actions.
    • When Xinqiu learns the identity of one of the vandals, he angrily lunges at Vivian and has to be held back by Keqing as he screams at the woman that she was not the only person to have lost a loved one and that she is being a horrible mother to the only family she has left. Because not only has her son also lost his father, his own mother seems so angry all the time she is essentially ignoring him as well.
  • Chapter 44 is essentially one big call out round aimed at the Insurgency and how they have so far handled things throughout the story.
    • Sucrose has finally had enough of their incompetence after Navya suggests dissecting Scaramouche and tells them just how she feels about them. Several people try to interrupt her, but she absolutely refuses to be silenced and yells at them, a far cry from being the timid assistant who loved alchemy in the past.
“No, Mavey! No more buts! It has to be said!” Sucrose jerked up, nearly sending the chair flying as she stabbed an accusatory finger at him. To all of them. “I’m tired of not being heard! So it’s your turn to listen to me. All the depravity that Aether has going on, you’re all so quick to condemn, but then you turn around and do the exact same FUCKING thing to your own people! The people you promised to protect!”
She didn’t even care if she was shouting; she was aware that the air int he room was picking up due to her anger, but she didn’t even care.
“Calm down, Sucrose,” Kaeya cautioned from the other side of the table, his blue eye slightly alarmed., but she couldn’t hear him over her rage.
“You try to try to get information from me? You end up traumatizing me!" She sliced the air with her palm, her glasses knocked askew; nothing was coming in the way between them and her amber-eyed anger. “You want to help nations starve off Aether? You can’t even protect them! Lumine has offered her services, but rather than giving her the safety, space, and freedom she deserves, you oppress her as much as Aether oppressed us! And you call that justice?”
    • Albedo calls out Ariel when she tells Sucrose to hold her tongue, telling her that she's using the War as an excuse to avoid making the more difficult, but the right choices.
“Stop hiding behind war as an excuse,” Albedo scoffed, folding his arms in front of him. Though he remained seated, Sucrose could feel tension coming off of him in waves. “You’re simply too afraid to make the harder decision. The right one. The good one.”
    • Kris in the same chapter bluntly tells everyone at the meeting that they don't care about the people, calling Eula out on whether the good decisions they are making truly include everyone. She then proceeds to call the Lawrence out on how she has led the Insurgency so far, stating that every meeting has essentially been mindless squabbling before essentially caving to the loudest and most opinionated individual and asking what the hell she has been doing the entire time. It ends with her accusing the entire group of not actually caring about the people they claim to be fighting for.
“We are making the good decisions here,” Eula interjected, raising her hands in supplication.
“Really?” Kris was getting in on it as well; she narrowed her eyes at Eula. “Does we include us? You know, the people you’re making those ‘good decisions’ for?”
    Eula faltered. “I-”
Kris pounced. “Does we even include the Committee? You’re supposed to be fucking leading the Insurgency, but every meeting I’ve attended is mindless squabbling before ultimately bowing to the strongest opinion. What kind of leadership is that?”
Eula flinched back, eyes shimmering. “That’s not what I’ve been doing, Kris.”
“Then what have you been doing?” Kris demanded, slapping a palm onto the table. “Seriously. What the fuck have you been doing?”
“You could stand to lose the attitude, Kris,” Navya replied frigidly. “We’re all up to our necks with in-house affairs. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Liyue has been restless ever since Aether came round. We’ve been trying to quell the calamity and calm the people.”
“Oh, don’t give me that patronizing shit. You don’t give a fuck about the people.”
  • Kendrick confronts Kris in the aftermath of the meeting in the next chapter when she's fetching supplies after the disaster of the earlier meeting, representing the people and how tired they are of the Committee not listening to them and treating them like a burden, and even worse like an enemy.
“Why do you think of us as the enemy?” the man said angrily. “Or a burden? Aren’t we the entire reason why the Insurgency was created? You could stand to listen to our concerns!”
  • Kaeya calls out Jules on his idea of using a Siphoner to kill Lumine because she isn't listening to them any more.
