What Could Have Been / On the Edge of Eureka

Go To

From the first unpublished draft, according to the author's Wattpad page:

  • The original draft was intended to be a novella that ended at chapter 12 with a Bolivian Army Ending when the main cast met the Miran ambassadors. Everyone in the main cast would have died then, with the implication that Alestra had won the war but would inevitably lose against the Mirans.
  • Eleutheria was originally supposed to be a semi-utopian, retrofuturistic/desielpunk society, and most of the characters would have had completely different names and professions.
  • The caste system was completely different: Ciphers were a slightly larger caste consisting of a few families, and Cantatores didn't exist. Caste Scientia was spelled with a C and was much higher-ranking than it was in the next draft.
  • The character that later became Acidalia was a young tomboy nicknamed Ash who was reluctant to take her mother's profession. It was eventually decided that having a more mature, older person to work on the political side and counteract the other characters' inexperience would be better for the plot.
    • Likewise, Lyra was a much more jaded street rat with a grudge against the monarchy. She later became Eureka's version of an ingenue because the plot wanted to show the characters' gradual descent from Wide-Eyed Idealist to people with Jade-Colored Glasses, and because Acidalia and other characters were already jaded and resentful enough.
    • TB-2115's nickname was Tee instead of T, and he was Lyra's love interest. He was essentially Ace, but the name Ace eventually got given to his best friend and TB-2115 was killed off to kickstart the war and his sister's character arc.
    • There was a character named Faye who was kind of a combination of Athena, Andromeda, and Cassiopeia. She was Acidalia's childhood friend and fellow Cipher with the personality of Andy. She was eventually cut because the aforementioned three characters filled her role in the plot, and the author realized that her character had become unnecessary.
    • Alpha-24 was a female android (gynoid?) named Ami, rather than the genderless male-presenting android he wound up being.
  • Most of the characters' names changed a lot.
    • Acidalia was originally Ash(lynn). That was changed because it was "too 2000s" and she was given the name Celestia. That was later changed due to Princess Celestia from My Little Pony, and she was named Ekaterina after her ancestor Kate Davis, which was also changed because it didn't test well with beta-readers.
    • Athena and Carina were originally Kristina and Millie, probably short for Melissa, back when Eleutheria was supposed to be a retrofuturistic '50s-style utopia.
    • Raeilya was named Athena, which was changed because it sounded too Earthling and was already associated with a character from Battlestar Galactica.
    • Aleskynn was Diana, which was changed because of Wonder Woman and because the author wanted the name to sound more like Alestra's (and be "annoying" to read, fitting Leski's irritating personality.)
