Western Animation / Winnie the Pooh and Christmas Too

Go To

Winnie the Pooh and Christmas Too is a 1991 Christmas Special based on the Winnie the Pooh franchise, and serves as the Grand Finale to The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

Two days before Christmas, Christopher Robin writes a letter to Santa Claus to say what he and his friends would like for Christmas. Rabbit wants a new fly swatter so he can keep bugs from eating his carrots, Eeyore wants an umbrella to keep the snow off his house, Tigger wants a snowshoe for his tail so he can bounce on the snow, Christopher Robin wants a sled big enough for him "and maybe a friend or two", and Piglet says that Santa can bring him anything.

After Christopher Robin throws the letter into the wind to send it to the North Pole, Piglet points out that Pooh has forgotten to tell Santa what he wants. They find the letter, redo it, and send it off again. But when Pooh finds that the letter has blown back to his house, he takes it upon himself to try to get his friends what they want.

The special was included in its entirety as a segment to pad out the 2002 Direct to Video film Winnie the Pooh: A Very Merry Pooh Year, albeit digitally remastered and redubbing Christopher Robin's voice to match that of the film.

Tropes:

  • Animation Bump: The animation stands out from the rest of the series, having been animated at Walt Disney France.
  • The Anti-Grinch: When Pooh finds that the letter has blown back to his house, he decides to make the presents his friends asked for, then dress up as Santa to deliver them. Unfortunately, the hastily made presents fall apart, and his friends decide to go after the fake Santa, not realizing it's Pooh.
  • Back for the Finale: Of a sort: Paul Winchell returns to voice Tigger, having previously been replaced by Jim Cummings for the show's third season.
  • Cartoon Bug-Sprayer: Rabbit asks Santa for one, so he can use it against the caterpillars eating his garden. Unfortunately, the one Pooh improvises for him falls apart the moment he tries to use it.
  • Christmas Carolers: When Rabbit hears caroling outside his door, he opens the door to hear the carolers better... and is shocked to see they are actually the bugs.
  • Christmas Episode: As told by the title.
  • Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, and Nixon: When leaving Rabbit's house while acting as Santa, Pooh fumbles the reindeer roll call by saying "On Donner, on Blitzen, on Armchair, and everyone else!" Later on, he announces "On Lawn Chair, on Badminton!" in a similar fashion.
  • Encouraged Regifting: When Christopher Robin is writing down what the others want from Santa, Pooh asks Christopher to include a pot of honey for each one, in case they want to share it with someone. Ironically, after the letter is sent, Pooh realizes he never asked for anything for himself (at least not directly); his attempt to get the letter back sets off the plot.
  • Genre Deconstruction: Christopher Robin sends a letter flying in the winter breeze in an attempt to get it to the North Pole. Later, Pooh and Piglet try to retrieve it. It turns out that they didn't retrieve the letter because it had been traveling for too long for Pooh and Piglet to catch up to it. The presents also arrive at Christopher Robin's house, because he wrote the letter, and presumably his parents bought them to humor him.
  • Grand Finale: The last official episode of New Adventures, though many direct-to-video specials after shared the same cast and production values and even used clips and continuity from episodes of the show. Poetically the third Christmas Special A Very Merry Pooh Year and the final featurette to do so, reused this.
  • Heroic BSoD: Piglet goes into a depression when Pooh leaves to deliver the letter.
  • Inflating Body Gag: Pooh and Piglet attempt to get the letter back “before Santa gets it” by flying with a balloon, which Piglet accidentally inflates himself with whilst trying to blow it up.
  • Object-Tracking Shot: The special opens on a tiny snowflake drifting across the Hundred Acre Wood, until it gets eaten by Tigger.
Tigger: Hmm, needs a little salt.
  • An Odd Place to Sleep: Tigger is shown sleeping in the bottom drawer of a dresser before Pooh as Santa arrives at his house.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Rabbit gasps in shock upon realizing that the carolers outside his front door turn out to be the bugs. He has another one seconds later when the bugs are about to eat the carrots on his Christmas tree.
    • All the animals react this way when they realize it's "half past the day before Christmas".
    • Pooh lets out an "Oh, Bother", as the letter he thought he just delivered flies right into his house.
    • Pooh gives another one later when he realizes he's going to have to climb up Tigger's roof and down his chimney, and it's pretty high up.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: At the end of the episode, when the animals hear sleigh bells, Tigger comments that if it's another fake Santa, he'll nail him.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Pooh's disguise as Santa fools everyone completely. Piglet also fools everyone into thinking that he is a reindeer despite his disguise only being a headband with antlers on it.
  • Running Gag: With Pooh as Santa, everyone's initial reaction is "Always thought he'd be taller."
  • Serial Escalation: While writing the revised letter to Santa, after being touched by Pooh thanking Rabbit for suggesting Pooh's gift should be a pot of honey, Pooh, Rabbit and Tigger start upgrading each other's gifts. Rabbit figures Pooh's been so good this year, he deserves two pots of honey. Pooh suggests giving Rabbit two fly swatters, before changing it to a bug sprayer that Rabbit's been wanting but was too afraid to ask for himself. Tigger ups Eeyore's umbrella to a new house, then two houses, before splitting the difference and making it "a whole condo-minimum". Pooh suggests giving Tigger four snowshoes, so he can bounce six times higher, then Rabbit decides they should be spring-loaded snowshoes. Tigger then requests that Pooh get ten pots of honey, followed by Eeyore chiming in to make it eleven.
  • Subbing for Santa: With the letter undelivered, Pooh dresses up as Santa to deliver his friends' presents. Unfortunately, the presents he makes for them are disastrous disappointments, and they soon go after the "fake Santa" before he strikes again.
  • Sweet and Sour Grapes: When they learn that Pooh walked all night trying to deliver the letter and failed, his friends agree that the important thing is that Pooh is alive and able to celebrate Christmas with them. Then Christopher Robin arrives on a sled, with the gifts everyone had originally wanted: a fly swatter, a snowshoe, an umbrella, and honey. Pooh feels bad about nearly ruining Christmas for everyone, and stands on the sealed honey pot to give Christopher Robin a Christmas hug.
