The Thanksgiving That Almost Wasn't is a 1972 animated Thanksgiving special produced by Hanna-Barbera.
It's the day of the first Thanksgiving in 1621, but oh no, a Pilgrim boy named Johnny Cooke and an Indian boy named Little Bear have gotten lost in the woods together! Fortunately, they're rescued by a friendly talking squirrel named Jeremy Squirrel, and that's the true story of how the day of Thanksgiving was saved.
The Thanksgiving That Almost Wasn't provides examples of:
- Beary Friendly: One of the friendly animals that watch over the boys is a bear.
- Cut a Slice, Take the Rest: A Native American does this with a cake at the first Thanksgiving. In case you thought the gag wasn't funny enough the first time, it's one of several animations that get recycled.
- Framing Device: A modern-day father squirrel is telling this story to his son.
- Inevitable Waterfall: Guess what happens when the boys try to get back to Plymouth by river.
- Savage Wolves: The climax features the boys getting chased by a vicious wolf. So apparently, bears are friendly in this universe, but wolves are not.
- Talking Animal: Johnny and Little Bear seem to think nothing of it when Jeremy starts talking to them.
