- Bizarre Alien Biology: The setting is a hospital in a very occupied galaxy with all manner of strange alien beings. A major plot point of the series is a brain parasite that feeds on anxiety.
- Chest Burster: One clip has Klak and Sleech operating on a patient with one of these, except they're trying to save the Chest Burster rather than the guy around him.
- Emotion Eater: Larvin the brain parasite literally eats anxiety by consuming cortisol. His species originally existed as a benevolent Symbiote, but UniYum toxic waste mutated his kind to be unendingly hungry.
- Extraordinary World, Ordinary Problems: The strange alien races, diseases, and treatments are juxtaposed with the modern and mundane problems faced by the characters. Klak has terrible anxiety in part due to a well-meaning but abusive mother, Sleech cannot emotionally commit to a relationship, Plowp falls in love with Sleech, etc.

- Parents as People: Klak's mother is a famous psychologist who spent decades trying to fix Klak's anxiety. It is clear that while she wanted her daughter to have an easier life, but her view that Klak needed to be fixed is a major contributor to Klak's anxiety and problems in the present.
- Sole Survivor: Larvin the brain parasite turns out to be the sole survivor of a species that originated on a planet outside the Galactic Health Union's jurisdiction.
