From the braintrust of Seth MacFarlane and the writers of Robot Chicken was born Star Wars Detours, a Star Wars animated gag series in the vein of the LEGO Star Wars animations and the Star Wars skits in Robot Chicken.

First announced at Celebration VI in 2012, the production of the series was then postponed in 2013 before being cancelled, with Lucasfilm and Disney being concerned over what image it would cast on the franchise following the latter's formal acquisition in 2014 and the then-upcoming Sequel Trilogy.

In 2021, with the leak of a Detours episode, speculation arose again, this time over the possibility of a Disney+ release, though co-creator Seth Green has denied the likeliness of it, citing no interest from Lucasfilm to do so.

According to Seth Green, by September 2013, 39 episodes had been completed and an 62 additional scripts had been completed.

Tropes in this series include:

  • Actor Allusion: At one point, Han Solo pointedly puts on a brown fedora. Subtle.

  • Adaptational Name Change: According to a few official sources, Hermione Bagwa's first name would have been changed to "Harmony" for the series, possibly to avoid confusion with that other fictional character named "Hermione".
  • Age Lift: Leia is only a teenager (or possibly a pre-teen) in the series, while Han is around the same age that he was in the movies, even though the series is (apparently) supposed to take place shortly before the original Star Wars. Don't think too hard about it.
  • Alpha Bitch: Leia amps up her film self's haughtiness to the highest possible level, to the point that she literally cannot function without being the centre of attention at all times.
  • Ascended Extra: Hermione Bagwa (the blonde waitress at Dex's Diner) has a pretty prominent comic relief role in the leaked episode, even being teased as a possible love interest of Boba Fett; she's also seen interacting with Obi-Wan in one clip, suggesting that she would have been a recurring character. Impressive, considering she was originally a background character in Attack of the Clones with less than ten seconds of screentime, and didn't say a word.
  • Brutal Honesty: Poor Jar Jar...
Jar Jar: Dexie, why everybody hate me-sa?
Dexter: Weeeell, how honest do we wanna get?
  • Bumbling Henchmen Duo: Zuckuss and 4-LOM are portrayed this way in the leaked episode.
  • The Cameo: Cad Bane from Star Wars: The Clone Wars would've appeared in Dex's Diner wearing a moustache.
  • Canon Foreigner: Leia's sisters. They all look almost exactly like her—even though she's adopted, and her biological mother is dead. Don't think too hard about it.
  • Crazy Homeless People: Ben Kenobi is portrayed as a senile old fossil, barely keeping it together since Order 66. He has annoying visions of Qui-Gon's ghost, he casually steals money from casinos and he manipulates women at conventions with Force tricks.
  • Dirty Old Man: The Emperor is apparently quite the womanizer. He spend his free time going on singles cruises, and deliberately spreads rumors that he dates Twi'lek models. All the more hilarious, since Seth MacFarlane's voice for him is markedly similar to the one he uses for Glenn Quagmire.
  • Flanderization: Admiral Ackbar gets several lines based on "IT'S A TRAP!"
Admiral Ackbar: Ah-ha! It's a ploy! No, it's a ruse! An ambush! No. A setup few- no. A confining device! No. A snare? A box propped up with a stick! It's a frappe! It's a wrap! Where's my hat?! IT'S A TRAP! Sorry, sorry. Just finally figured it out. On my way back to the office. Couldn't get it out of my head, gotta go. I'm double parked.
  • Gag Series: Much like LEGO Star Wars and the Robot Chicken skits, Detours was a comedy-oriented cartoon meant to affectionately joke about the franchise.
  • Greasy Spoon: Like in the original LEGO Star Wars game, Dex's Diner on Coruscant seems to serve as the default hang-out spot for most of the main characters.
  • Interquel: The show is a comedic interpretation of the events between the Prequel and Original Trilogies.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Obi-Wan makes a joke on stand-off comedy about how Mace Windu was thrown out of a window. Nobody finds it funny until he Jedi Mind Tricks them into laughing.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Han and Chewie are humorously portrayed this way, riffing on their Heterosexual Life-Partners relationship in the movies. In one of the leaked clips, Chewie gets angry at Han for being late to dinner, and the two of them end up having an argument that resembles a lover's quarrel.
  • No Fourth Wall: At one point, two Stormtroopers survive falling into a bottomless pit on the Death Star after they discover that it's just a matte painting (the studio's budget ran out).
  • Rule of Funny: The entire series runs on this. It makes absolutely no pretense of being set in the continuity of the actual Star Wars films, and many of the characters are portrayed drastically differently than they were in the movies for the sake of humor.
  • Seinfeldian Conversation: Vader and Palpatine have one in Dex's Diner (which is more than a little similar to Monk's Café, appropriately enough).
Vader: Boy, the service here is slow!
    Palpatine: We haven't even ordered!
Vader: I know, that's what I mean. It would be good to order alread—
Palpatine: I know, that's what I was saying!
Vader: Oh. I thought you were disagreeing. (Beat) Yeah. It would be good to order!
  • There Is Another: In this clip, Leia has a twin… four twin sisters (quintuplets?), in fact.
  • Totally Radical: Vader's propaganda campaign for the Empire screams this.
Vader: Yo dudes, the Empire's pretty chill. Maybe you should, like, join it or something.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: It seems that Vader and Palpatine's overarching goal throughout the series would have been to promote the Empire as a friendly, marketable corporation. They attempt to disguise the Death Star as a "space mall". It somehow works, for a little while at least.
  • Who's on First?: This exchange:
    Cad Bane: Am not!
    Bossk: Are too!
(R2 pops out from behind a nearby booth)
Cad Bane: Nobody's talking to you, trashcan!
(R2 beeps sadly as he sinks back behind the booth)
