Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero is an American 2018 CGI animated film developed and distributed by Fun Academy Media Group.

Based on real-life events, the movie chronicles the life of Stubby, a bulldog who befriends an American soldier-in-training, Robert Conroy, during World War I. When Conroy and his comrades are shipped across the Atlantic to fight in France, Stubby manages to sneak aboard. Despite having no military training, the higher ups decide to let Stubby stay in the 26th Yankee Division. Now in the trenches of France, Stubby and Conroy stick together as they try to fend off the encroaching German army.

This movie has examples of:

  • Adaptation Species Change: Instead of a mixed bull terrier, the movie depicts Stubby as a boxer, though this could also just be attributed to the Art Style.
  • Bloodless Carnage: For obvious reasons.
  • Bully Bulldog: Inverted as Stubby is very friendly to the 26th Division. (Not so much toward the Germans though.)
  • Canine Companion: Stubby always wants to be near Conroy. He'll even follow his master to a literal war zone.
  • Heroic Dog: Stubby didn't just run around to play fetch with soldiers. To the best of a dog's abilities, Stubby detected noxious gases, searched for wounded soldiers, and even caught a German spy. His efforts gained him notoriety as a war hero.
  • Military Salute: Stubby actually knows how to salute to superiors, raising his right front paw over his face.
  • Retirony: Like in real life, many soldiers died at the final morning of World War I, just before they would finally go back home. Elmer was one of those soldiers.
  • War Is Hell: Despite its Bloodless Carnage, the film didn't shy away from the misery and horrors of the First World War. One such example is American soldiers seeing a trench filled with somber French soldiers and casualties being carted off.
