Hot enough for ya?

Hell's bells ringing in my ear
It's certainly hot
Now isn't that swell
Now somebody's got
A hold of those bells
They start to ring
They start to sing
And somebody yells
It must be Hell's bells!

A Max and Dave Fleischer cartoon starring Betty Boop released on February 2, 1934.

During a grueling winter in her freezing cold house, Betty falls asleep by the fireplace and dreams about being somewhere warmer and that somewhere turns out to be hell itself.

Tropes Used In This Short:

  • All Just a Dream: Heavily implied that Betty dreamed up the whole thing.
  • Breath Weapon: A long and coiled up dragon breathes fire like it's a fire hose. Also the Devil King can breath fire.
  • Comedic Spanking: When a living flame won't stop following Betty, she spanks it, somehow without burning her hand.
  • Everything Talks: In Betty's house there are gags involving a clock, a thermometer and a painting briefly coming alive.
  • Evil Living Flames: Multiple appear throughout the short, one won't stop following Betty so she spanks it like a child until it leaves.
  • Fanservice: See Sexy Silhouette.
  • Fire and Brimstone Hell: The central setting of the cartoon, with emphasis on the fire.
  • For Doom the Bell Tolls: In hell, Betty rings a giant pair of bells that starts the musical number, "Hell's Bells" which continue ringing throughout the song.
  • Girly Run: Betty does this when first walking through hell, though it's more of a fast walk.
  • Hellgate: Betty's fireplace becomes this, complete with demonic faces surrounding it.
  • A Hell of a Time: Hell certainly is presented as lively.
  • Instant Roast: The fireplace heat turns a pair of chickens into roasted chickens.
  • Kill It with Ice: Betty ends up freezing a group of devils and their king as well as hell itself.
  • Living Drawing: When the heat of the fireplace reaches a painting of an Eskimo in front of an igloo, the igloo melts and the Eskimo takes off his fur coat for relief.
  • Our Demons Are Different: Hell is full of devil looking demons, with their king being the biggest.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: The firemen devil use a long dragon creature and use it's breath like a firehose to set a house on fire.
  • Pajama-Clad Hero: Betty spends the short walking through hell in her night gown, which actually covers more then her usual Little Black Dress.
  • Readings Blew Up the Scale: The heat of Betty's fireplaces causes a thermometer's readings to go from Hot, Hotter, Too Hot and finally to Colossal where it rapidly perspires mercury and starts to fan itself.
  • Rump Roast: Some fire travels up some devil's tails and to their butts, where they jump in pain.
  • Satan: The biggest devil wearing a crown seems to be this.
  • Sexy Silhouette: While walking past some flames, Betty's figure can be seen through her night gown.
  • Standard Snippet: When Betty's chickens start cooking, a fast pace version of "Shortnin' Bread" can be heard.
  • Stealth Pun / Visual Pun:
    • Some devils dressed as firemen appear, only their purpose seems to be to start fires.
    • When faced with a group of devils, Betty literally gives them the cold shoulder and gives their king a cold stare; which causes hell to freeze over.
