Notes to You is a 1941 Looney Tunes short (8 min.) directed by Friz Freleng, and starring Porky Pig.

Porky is settling down to sleep when he's woken up by an alley cat singing outside. He tries everything to shut the cat up, until he takes things too far...

Remade seven years later as Back Alley Oproar, with Sylvester The Cat and Elmer Fudd.

Tropes

  • Cat Concerto: A cat keeps Porky awake by singing opera.
  • Cats Have Nine Lives: Porky shoots and kills the alley cat, and the cat's nine lives outside his window sing the "Sextet" from the opera Lucia di Lammermoor before the cartoon ends.
  • Incessant Music Madness: Porky just becomes more and more outraged at the cat's concerto as the short goes on.
  • Jerkass: Rather than just singing on the fence, the alley cat appears to do everything he can to keep Porky awake/intentionally drive him crazy. At one point, he even sings a lullaby to Porky to make him fall asleep and put him to bed...only to wake him up again by playing blaring music on Porky's radio.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Porky has this moment after he kills the alley cat. He didn't mean to do so, as he just wanted to get some sleep.
  • One-Man Band: One of the many ways that the Alley Cat infuriates Porky is by performing as a one-man band in Porky's bedroom.
  • That Reminds Me of a Song: After Porky shoots him, the cat uses his last breaths to sing "Farewell to Thee" (the English version of "Aloha 'Oe").
  • Throw the Book at Them: Porky throws the book Dr. Fu Manchu at the cat, and has Return of Fu Manchu thrown back at him.
