Meet the Kids (Next Door)

Original air date: 7/20/2001 (produced in 2000)

No P in the OOL is the original pilot for Codename: Kids Next Door. It aired as part of Cartoon Network's Big Pick Weekend, where viewers were allowed to vote on the next cartoon series, ultimately becoming the winner. Once the main series was produced, the short was included in an episode with Operation: C.A.K.E.D. along with the failed Kenny and the Chimp pilot, Diseasy Does It (or Chimp 'n' Pox).

The plot, like in the main series, is Serious Business. Adult Swim at the local pool has been extended to the point that kids get no swim time of their own. The Kids Next Door decide to put a stop to it, but find themselves up against lifeguards Mr. Fibb and Mr. Wink in their souped up Super Chair.

Uploading Tropes

  • Avengers Assemble: The short starts out with on of these, with Numbuhs 5-2 being summoned from what their doing (5 chillin', 4 sparring with a robot, 3 playing with her toys, and 2 sleeping) to the meeting room by Numbuh 1. (Also Establishing Character Moment)
  • The Cameo: If you look closely, Kenny and Chimpy are part of the crowd at the pool.
  • The Complainer Is Always Wrong: Numbuh 1 is the butt of a couple of jokes as a result of protesting the other members of the team not taking the mission seriously. Because of his protests, Numbuh 3 intentionally leaves him out when she brings back snacks for everyone.
  • Downer Ending: Numbuh 1 accidentally drains all of the pool's water by drilling a hole in it, making it so that neither the adults or kids can swim.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Among other things:
    • There's a distinct lack of Fun with Acronyms. (Gasp!)
    • Sector V is the only KND branch and it's strongly suggested that they're actually a group of Villain Protagonist brats who perceive every minor rule as an evil plot.
    • Numbuh 5 wears glasses when reading, which she doesn't do in the actual show.
    • Numbuh 1 spoke with more of a monotone during the debriefing session, when he typically speaks with more firmness and emphasis during any situation he takes command.
    • Numbuh 3 had a vague Asian accent.
    • Numbuh 4 was as excited as everyone else to go to the pool. In the series proper, he can't swim and is afraid of water.
    • The KND transition logo is much different in design from the one shown in every other episode.
    • The credits, while having the mostly same lyrics, has a slightly different tune and arrangement.
    • The kids have very long necks and the Thick-Line Animation is especially thick.
    • Numbuh 1's signature Cool Shades are noticeably duller, lacking a white reflection.
  • Fastball Special: The Kid-a-Pault, with Numbuh 2 as the ammo.
    Numbuh Two: Me?! Oh no.
  • Harmless Electrocution: Fibb and Wink quickly set up an electric fence around the pool during Adult Swim time, which all the kids run into and get fried by. They're not seriously harmed by it, though.
  • Mid-Battle Tea Break: The struggle against Fibb and Wink's Super Chair is put on hold for snack-time, courtesy of Numbuh 3, who even bought some ice cream for Wink and Fibb.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Numbuh 1 accidentally ends up drilling a hole into the pool, and now nobody can swim.
  • Putting the Pee in Pool: Along with being referenced by the title, when the KND is forced to go to the kiddie pool, Numbuh 3 mentions that the water is "nice and warm", and the others look suspiciously at the little kids surrounding them.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Numbuh 1 attempting to use the Super Chair against the lifeguards results in the pool being drained, meaning no one, kids or adults, can use it.
  • Shout-Out: As with in the main series, Mr. Wink and Mr. Fibb are more or less carbon-copy Expies of Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd from Diamonds Are Forever. They even slightly paraphrase the "If at first you don't succeed, try try again" exchange from that film.
  • This Is a Drill: A feature of the Super Chair.
