Go To

Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell is a Marvel Animation Halloween Special featuring Hulk (Fred Tatasciore) and Dr. Strange (Liam O'Brien). The demon Nightmare is tapping into the fears of sleeping children, resulting in them being transformed into the manifestations of their hidden terrors. But Hulk is also being targeted by Nightmare, causing him to revert back to Bruce Banner at the worst possible times. Now it is up to Hulk and Dr. Strange, along with the Howling Commandos, to put the pieces together before Earth becomes the plaything of Nightmare.

Tropes applying to Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell

  • Achilles in His Tent: After Nightmare is defeated, a still despondent Benito plans to go into a self-imposed exile. Clearly still needing time to process what Nightmare did to him, Hulk suggests he stay with the Howling Commandos, at least until he sorts things out.
  • Action Prologue: The film opens with a battle between Doctor Strange, Hulk and some monstrous creatures, before moving onto the main plot.
  • An Arm and a Leg: At one point, Nightmare traps Strange in a nightmare wherein the good doctor's hands literally vanish.
  • Badass Boast: Benito gets a good one in on Nightmare.
Benito: "You...! You turned me into my worst nightmare!
(Delivers the Coup de GrĂ¢ce on Nightmare.)
    Benito: "Now I'm yours...!"
  • Badass Crew: S.H.I.E.D.'s Paranormal Containment Unit, who Hulk later rechristens the "Howling Commandos".
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: Much of the action takes place within the Dream Realm, focusing on the current conflict between Bruce Banner and Hulk.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Hulk, Dr. Strange, and the Howling Commandos manage to defeat Nightmare and save the entire world. But as a result of Nightmare's spells, Benito Serrano is trapped in the form of a massive minotaur, and must give up his human life and home.
  • Blood Knight: War-Wolf, he's the most Trigger-Happy member of the Howling Commandos. Always ready with a spare gun, just in case of emergencies.
  • Came Back Strong: At one point the human boy, Benito is seemingly killed by Nightmare. As it turns out, his body was actually transformed into the thing he feared most. A large Minotaur-like creature with super strength.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Doctor Strange (understandably) assumes that Nightmare is using Bruce Banner's subconscious fears as a means of subduing the Hulk. Despite Banner's continued assurances that he's come to grips with the Hulk and no longer resents him. As it turns out, Banner was telling the truth, it was actually "Hulk's" fear of Banner that Nightmare was manipulating the whole time. A fact that surprises both Strange and Banner.
  • Excessive Evil Eyeshadow: This version of Nightmare sports some heavy eyeshadow.
  • Fighting Your Friend: How Bruce views his fighting with the Hulk while wearing the (imagined) Hulkbuster Armor. Hulk however does not share the sentiment.
  • Halloween Special: Takes place on Halloween? Check. Heroic Monsters? Check. Demons and magic? Check. Trick-or-treating? Yup, we have that, too.
  • Horror Hunger: Jasper, being a zombie, suffers this from time to time. But he keeps this under control with an occasional..."snack".
  • Taking the Bullet: Benito shoves Anna out of the way of Nightmare's blast. And while it doesn't kill him...
  • You Don't Want to Know: When informed that Jasper's Horror Hunger is mitigated with a bag filled with "snacks", Bruce asks what kind. Nina responds with the Trope in question.
