“For Whom The Bulls Toil” is a 1953 Classic Disney Short starring Goofy.

While vacationing in Mexico, Goofy is stopped by a bull standing in the middle of the road. Mistaking it for a stubborn cow, Goofy tries to shoo it away, and when he takes out his red handkerchief to wipe his brow, the bull charges, but keeps missing the oblivious Goof. The locals are impressed by the bullfighting skills of this "loco Americano" and send him to the bull ring. Goofy is flattered by all this hospitality, until he finally realizes that he's supposed to fight a bull.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Hero: Goofy had no idea he was being a matador when he was trying to get a bull off the road; he just happened to step out of the way every time the bull charged him.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At the end, while driving in his car, Goofy comes across what appears to be another bull sitting in the middle of the road. After Goofy flees from the animal, it is revealed to be a cow.
  • Beastly Bloodsports: Goofy is mistaken for a skilled bullfighter when unwittingly conquering a bull. He is then chosen as the matador for the next bullfight.
  • Bull Seeing Red: The bull on the road doesn't respond until Goofy wipes his brow with a red handkerchief.

    • After running out of the arena, Goofy lights a match and finds himself face to face with the bull. He promptly runs from the bull.
    • At the end when Goofy drives up behind what appears to be another bull in the road.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title of this short is a parody of Ernest Hemingway’s novel “For Whom The Bells Toll.”
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Most of the time, the bull’s eyes are pink, but at one point during fight with Goofy, his eyes glow red.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Goofy attempts to do this twice and fails each time.
    • When realizing he is the matador, Goofy runs out of the arena, but into the bull’s stable by mistake. He is then chased out of the stable by the bull himself.
    • During his fight with the bull, Goofy attempts to flee in his car only to be dragged back into the arena by his recoiling suspenders which are still stuck on the bull’s horns.
  • Stock Footage: While Goofy dodges him, the charging bull crashes into the same group of bulls the titular character of “Ferdinand” strikes like bowling pins.
  • Suspender Snag: After Goofy's suspenders come loose, he tries to put them back on, but they get caught on the bull's horns. The bull uses it to his advantage by swinging him around the arena by his suspenders. Goofy then tries to escape into his car, but he gets dragged back by his suspenders.
