False Hare is a 1964 Looney Tunes cartoon directed by Robert McKimson. It is the latter of two cartoons where Bugs Bunny is pitted against the unnamed Uncle Big Bad (“Now Hare This” being the former) and serves as the final Bugs Bunny cartoon in the original Golden Age era.

Uncle Big Bad and his nephew are putting together a club del conejo (“rabbit” in Spanish), in the bid to get him on the dinner table. From the application form Bugs signs to the numerous initiation rituals Uncle Big Bad sets out, it’s a Road Runner vs. Coyote characterization.

This short is notable for being the final short made at the original Termite Terrace studio prior to its closure (though "Señorella and the Glass Huarache" was the last one released).

Did somebody say, tropes?

  • Ass in a Lion Skin: Big Bad and his nephew dress as rabbits, with Big Bad sticking long leaves on his hat as ears.
  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: Big Bad; his nephew is in shoes shaped like rabbit paws.
  • Bowdlerization: The version shown on CBS's The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show cut the part where Uncle Big Bad tries to get Bugs to pose for his club ID photo in front of an iron maiden and Uncle Big Bad ends up impaled.
  • The Cameo: Foghorn Leghorn in the penultimate frame of the cartoon, also making his last appearance.
  • Double Entendre: In addition to being a Pun-Based Title for false hair, it also conveys that the wolves are impostors, or false hares, themselves.
  • End of an Age: It is notable in three ways: the last cartoon the original Termite Terrace studio produced, the last classic-era cartoon featuring Bugs Bunny and Foghorn Leghorn, and the last to have the dimensional ring opening.
  • Here We Go Again!: At the end of the episode, Big Bad gets tired of his tricks against Bugs backfiring and decides to try opening a rooster club. Cue sudden appearance by Foghorn Leghorn, and Bugs wondering who's going to win this battle of wits.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Every single Booby Trap that Uncle Big Bad uses in the initiation process. Be it the ringing of a bell connected to a safe, an Iron Maiden, or a hole that goes into a loaded cannon, Bugs never falls for it.
  • It Amused Me: Bugs doesn't remotely fall for Uncle Big Bad's plans, but decides to play along out of boredom.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Bugs is less than convinced by the two wolves' rabbit disguises.
  • Too Gruesome for Cartoon Physics: The Big Bad Wolf and his child nephew want to catch Bugs Bunny for food. One of the gags involves an iron maiden rigged to close on Bugs after the wolf nephew runs out of a closet door after his uncle says "Now!". When Bugs tricks the Big Bad Wolf into getting in front of the iron maiden, he says "Oh, I get it now!", and the nephew busts open the closet door, with the iron maiden clamping down on the uncle. The nephew peeks inside, and only looks at the audience with a disgusted "Yeesh!" and a cringed look.
  • Speak of the Devil: At the end, the wolf grumbles, "I wonder if anyone would like to join a chicken club?" and Foghorn Leghorn shows up, asking, "Someone, I say, someone mention my name?"
  • Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Played for Laughs. They’re literal wolves, with the older one having an eye on eating the bunny. The younger one is just along for the ride and having his own fun along the way.
