“Dude Duck” is a 1951 Classic Disney Short starring Donald Duck.

Donald Duck visits a dude ranch, where he is assigned to a horse named Rover Boy. Rover Boy refuses to let Donald ride him and outwits him at every corner.

Tropes:

  • Anthropomorphic Zig-Zag: As a cartoon horse, Rover Boy switches from standing or running on all for legs to standing or running on his hind legs, also uses his front hooves as hands.
  • Cool Horse: Rover Boy! He can play the horseshoe toss game and tends to outwit Donald.
  • Delayed Reaction: While chasing Rover Boy, Donald is briefly fooled by the horse’s Paper-Thin Disguise mentioned below. It takes Donald a few seconds to realize he’s been tricked.
    Rover Boy: Moo!
(Rover Boy whispers to Donald which way he went. Donald runs with a lasso until he suddenly catches on)
Donald: Moo? (Turns to Rover Boy with a rant)
  • Horsing Around: Rover Boy isn't going to let Donald ride him without a fight.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Rover Boy breaks down into tears upset that none of the women have chosen to ride him.
  • Moody Mount: Rover Boy is only interested in being ridden by one of the beautiful women and refuses to let Donald ride him.
  • Oh, Crap!: Rover Boy sees Donald dressed in fancy riding clothes and laughs at him, but he stops laughing when he realizes Donald is his assigned rider.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Rover Boy disguises himself as a longhorn cow only wearing a pair of long horns tied to his forelock while Donald chases him. Donald is briefly fooled until he suddenly catches on.
  • Playing Sick: Rover Boy not only pretends to be sick, but also tries convincing Donald that he’s in terrible shape and condition for being ridden. Donald is fooled at first, but soon catches on.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The bull has a pair of red eyes, signifying him as a mad animal.
  • Rotoscoping: Used for the shot of women coming out of the bus. According to one of the animators, they could have just animated them by hand, but having the studio full of women in sweaters running around for them to study was just too much to resist.
