Go To

"Donald's Dream Voice" is a 1948 Classic Disney Short directed by Jack King, starring Donald Duck.

Donald is a door-to-door salesman, but no one will buy his wares because they can't understand his voice. With some encouragement from Daisy, he sets back out again, but then discovers a pill that can give one a "golden voice". Donald takes one and finds himself talking with perfect diction. Using the miracle pills to sell off his inventory, he runs off to Daisy's to propose, but as always, things don't turn out as well for poor Don.

Tropes:

  • Downer Ending: Donald loses his last pill to a cow that swallows it.
  • The Faceless: Most of the people in this short. The biggest exception is the burly sewer worker who Donald tries getting his pill back from.
  • Hates Everyone Equally: The cynical sewer worker who hates people. And yet...
  • Hypocrite: The burly sewer worker claims that he hates people. However, when he sees Donald disguised as a woman, the sewer worker tips his hat greeting him in a friendly manner.
  • Impact Silhouette: During Donald’s attempt to get the pill back, the sewer worker punches his fist through the brick wall and pulls Donald out creating a silhouette hole of him.
  • Literal Ass-Kicking: Donald gets booted away like this by one of the people who reject him because of his unintelligible voice. He's then shown with an imprint of the sole on his butt.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: The sewer worker is a caricature of Disney story artist Roy Williams, best known as the "Big Mooseketeer" on The Mickey Mouse Club. Incidentally, Williams was the writer for this cartoon.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: The sewer worker pulls Donald out of the building through the wall. One second after he he shoves the duck back into the wall, Donald suddenly shows up next to him disguised as a woman.
  • Phlebotinum Pills: The Golden Voice pills that make Donald speak like a normal person. Unfortunately, they wear off after a while, and he ends up losing all but one, which he then loses at the very end.
  • Traveling Salesman: Donald's job on this cartoon is selling brushes door to door.
  • Traveling Salesman Montage: Donald is shown going door to door selling brushes, only to be rejected by his unintelligible voice.
