In his first Saturday-Morning Cartoon produced expressly for television, Casper the Friendly Ghost was a guardian ghost to two female space cops, Minnie and Maxi. Casper's partner, Hairy Scary, was more eager to scare people than Casper himself was.

Casper and Hairy Scary also appeared in two prime-time specials on NBC. For the Christmas one, see Casper's First Christmas.

This cartoon provides examples of:

  • Animated Adaptation: Not officially, but this show was basically "Casper meets CHiPs and Charlie's Angels IN SPACE!".
  • Batman Can Breathe in Space: Minnie and Maxi do perfectly well patrolling outer space in standard 20th-century police uniforms.
  • Berserk Button: One thing that's guaranteed to earn you a scare from Hairy Scary is ripping off Casper, as a carnival barker in "Space Circus" finds out.
  • Butt-Monkey: Minnie, to an extent.
  • Expy: Hairy Scary serves as a stand-in for the Ghostly Trio.
  • Gag Nose: Minnie has a pointed nose, likely to emphasize her clumsiness.
  • Only Sane Woman: Maxi is the most level-headed character of the four.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Casper (Blue) is level-headed and reluctant to act like a typical ghost, whereas Hairy Scary (Red) is a buffoon who enjoys frightening people. On the distaff side, Minnie's red hair reflects her Red Oni personality as opposed to Maxi's Blue.
  • Scared of What's Behind You: In one story, Hairy performs his scary routine behind Casper so the latter will think he's the one scaring the bad guys.
  • Second Place Is for Winners: In one story, Fungo and Nerdley argue with Maxi and Minnie over who gets to do patrolling and, on Casper's suggestion, settle this by drawing lots. Fungo and Nerdley win and get to patrol. Then the Chief shows up with tickets for the circus and, having won the lot drawing, Fungo and Nerdley have to miss the show while Maxi and Minnie are free to enjoy it.
  • Silly Spook: Hairy Scary, who illustrates that page.
  • Spoofy-Doo: The show has a lot in common with Scooby-Doo, with Casper in the role of the team pet.
