"Cannery Rodent" is a 1967 Tom and Jerry short, written and directed by Chuck Jones.

In a twist on John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, Tom and Jerry find themselves tinned in a canning factory. Once out of their cans, they end up in the sea, pursued by a shark.


Tropes:

  • Laser-Guided Karma: Tom gets it when he is an Ungrateful Bastard after Jerry saves him from the shark. After Jerry escapes his grasp due to still being affected by the pepper he used against the shark earlier, as Tom jumps into the water after Jerry and looks angrily around for him, cue Jerry appearing with a fake shark dorsal fin, Tom having an epic Oh, Crap! freak out upon seeing it, and swimming for his dear life, thinking the shark is still out to eat him.
  • Oh, Crap!: Tom has an epic one when he sees the fake shark dorsal fin Jerry uses to give him some Laser-Guided Karma for being an Ungrateful Bastard for saving him from the shark earlier. Tom is left swimming frantically for his life as Jerry swims after him with devil horns and a Slasher Smile on his face.
  • Packed Hero: At the start of the short, Tom and Jerry stumble into a seafood canning factory and are sealed in cans with their respective faces on the labels. Tom later uses his claw to open his can from inside.
  • Pepper Sneeze: When the shark is about to eat Tom, Jerry employs this method to save him, but instead of the nose, he pours the pepper into the shark's mouth. Jerry, however, ends up getting one of these in the nose while pouring it into the shark's mouth. After the shark sneezes Tom out, the force of the sneeze launches him into the canning factory in which Tom and Jerry ended up earlier, where it is then sealed into a large can and is seen with a sad look on his face.

  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After the shark is launched into the canning factory in which Tom and Jerry ended up earlier after sneezing Tom out and is then put in a large can, it is unknown if he survived after the fact.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Tom, who shows no gratitude to Jerry for saving him from the shark, captures him shortly after Jerry gets an angelic halo for his good deed, which Tom pops with his devil horns he gets after snatching him up before letting off an Evil Laugh as he prepares to deal with Jerry once and for all.
