Go To

A Coy Decoy is a 1941 Looney Tunes theatrical short directed by Bob Clampett, starring Daffy Duck and Porky Pig.

In a book store where book come to life (a common plot in the 30's cartoons), Daffy Duck plays the role off the Ugly Duckling who has to face off with The Wolf of Wall Street. The cartoon would get a semi-remake five years later called Book Revue, only without Porky.

Tropes:

  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: At the end, Porky tells us that Daffy's wasting his time with the decoy, saying they couldn't mean anything to each other.
  • Bowdlerization: When this short aired on Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Boomerang, the scene of Daffy riding on a blackface mammy caricature like a horse was cut, either by cutting the scene after Daffy starts vocalizing or cutting before he exits the book.
  • Everything Sounds Sexier in French: Daffy does this in order to woo the female duck decoy.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Porky initially laughs at Daffy falling in love with the duck decoy, saying they couldn't mean anything to each other. Daffy and the decoy scoff at him before swimming away with their clockwork children.
One of the clockwork children: You and your education!
  • Out of Focus: Porky's only appearances in the cartoon are at start, singing Ride, Tenderfoot, Ride and reacting to Daffy riding on the blackface mammy caricature and at the end, insulting Daffy for falling in love with the decoy.
  • Rhyming Title: A Coy Decoy
  • The Runt at the End: The last of Daffy and the decoy's children is much smaller than the rest.
  • Shout-Out:
    • At the beginning, Daffy Duck sings "I Can't Get A Long Little Dogie" from Cliff Edwards and his Buckaroos.
    • When seeing the duck decoy, Daffy says "Well, Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar", a reference to a hit song at the time of the same name.
    • While being chased by the Wolf, Daffy stops him saying, "You're a ha-a-a-a-ard man, McGee!" before continuing his chase, a reference to a popular catchphrase from the radio series Fibber McGee and Molly
  • You Won't Like How I Taste: Daffy attempts this to stop the wolf from trying to eat him.
Daffy Duck: I'm only a little fella. Not even a mouthful! Look, I'm just skin and bones! (pulls his skin to reveal only bones inside them)
