The Nightmare Project was a website that ran from 1997 to 2002 whose goal was to catalog the "darkest recesses of the human psyche." Individuals could submit their nightmares to the site for others to read, and others to analyze and comment on. For the years that it was active, the site provided a prime source of literal Nightmare Fuel.

In 2010, a partial restoration of the site was created by a devoted fan, titled the Nightmare Archive. Some of the nightmares from the old site were reposted, and new ones added. Commenting on has been disabled on the new site however.

This site provides examples of:

  • Bears Are Bad News: The dream "Unspeakable Things" has the dreamer pursued by a bear with metal skin through a Lethal Lava Land.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: In the dream "Unspeakable Things," the dreamer holds a gun, prepared to kill himself rather than let the monster do horrible things to him.
