Webcomic / The Strongest Suit

Go To

A rather strange webcomic about the goings-on of the Deck, an isolated village inhabited by anthropomorphic playing cards, found on Comicfury and on Tapastic. Worldbuilding abounds, especially as the characters start to discover hints of the world beyond the wilderness that surrounds the Deck. Though it has its fair share of drama (it does open with a murder after all), most of the comic is light-hearted and comedic.

The Strongest Suit provides examples of:

  • Alice Allusion: Averted for the most part (for instance, the Queen of Hearts is a withdrawn, not-at-all-homicidal background character), but the appearance of the Cards does somewhat resemble that which the Alice Cards took in the 1951 adaptation, as can the idea of Spades as lowly workes oppressed by the noble warrior Hearts.
  • Action Prologue: The story opens with Five of Hearts murdering Seven of Hearts on a patrol.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: The Playing Cards themselves, who are human-sized and anthropomorphic. This is not truly the case in-universe however, as they are a legitimate sapient species rather than normal cards brought to life.
  • Cool Airship: The Spade Airship, while not particularly large, is awe-inspiring, and the first-ever airship to take flight in-universe.
  • Fantastic Racism: Hearts consider themselves superior to Spades.
  • Hollywood Acid: The Thinner River in The Strongest Suit is Exactly What It Says on the Tin: a river of super-corrosive liquid. Although to be fair it is colorless rather than green or yellow, and doesn't bubble or fume.
  • Playing Card Motifs: Obviously.
  • Retirony: Played with. Seven of Hearts is killed on what would have been the last patrol into the Dark Lands… by his fellow soldier Five who doesn't want the patrols to end for as-yet-unknown reasons.
