Bit of a Late-Arrival Spoiler on the left.note

Note: As The Renegade is an ongoing Web Comic, this page is in need of expansion, so if you have read the comic, please add any tropes that may have been missed and alter spoiler tags as needed.

The Renegade is an Asian-based Fantasy full of anthropomorphic animals, most of them mammals, uploaded onto Scratch and updates somewhat sporadically. As of December 2022, there are almost thirty chapters.

Aspect lives in the woods away from any civilization, attacking bandits along the trails, and looking to avenge the death of his half-brother, Fire. One night, Fire appears to Aspect in a dream and tells him that a different quest for Aspect: to go to Jianglao with a general and meet someone he will travel with to Dragonscale Ridge — but he must get there before the new moon.

Despite the already sizable chapter archive, the story is still in its early stages, with some characters of the main cast still being introduced, so spoiler tags in the examples may change as more chapters get published.

The Renegades contains examples of:

  • Aerith and Bob: Most of the characters in this story have either Asian-sounding names or names of different English nouns. However, this trope actually applies three ways because a noodle-vendor is named Catherine.
  • Animal Stereotypes: The first chapter has a band of raccoon thieves stealing from a salesperson.
  • Animation Bump: Usually, the comic pages (aside from the thumbnail) are drawn as line art or even sketches, but many chapters have at least one or two fully colored and shaded pages. This sometimes overlaps with an Unexpected Art Upgrade Moment, but the added color seems random about as often.
  • Author Avatar: The author puts her own fusona in the comic as a mentor and aid to Sulfer/Venge, though her Author Powers seem limited to creating objects with her tablet and bringing a few things from the real world into her home.
  • Content Warnings: Several chapters have warnings in the description for things like mild blood, violence, language, crude humor, and suggestive content: one chapter outright states that the comic is meant for ages 12 and over and asks that nobody report it. Justified since a lot of Scratch viewers are children.
  • Fully-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Most of the characters fall into this trope, although there are a few Barefoot Cartoon Animals in the mix.
  • Love at First Sight: Aspect for Snowshoe, accompanied by an Unexpected Art Upgrade Moment.
  • Luminescent Blush: Isu, Snowshoe/Frostbite, and Aspect are all prone to this, especially Aspect: his face apparently gets so hot he can make grilled cheese sandwiches with his Crush Blush.
  • Sliding Scale Of Silliness Vs Seriousness: The creator herself mentions this in an early chapter description. The character backstories deal with some rather serious problems such as sexism and death of loved ones, but there are some pretty silly moments such as reduced-quality drawings for comedic effect and exchanges such as this one:
Snowshoe: I'm sorry for snapping at you yesterday. And waking you up in the middle of the night and licking your face and calling you a dummy.
    Aspect: It's all cool, Snowshoe. I —
    [beat]
Aspect: [blushing] Um... *ahem* ...what did you do to my face?
Snowshoe: um. [beat] you taste like moss.
Aspect: Why did— why would you lick my face?
Snowshoe: ...i wanted to know what you tasted like. just a simple experiment haha—
Snowshoe: ...i dunno. what's it to you?
    Aspect: IT'S CONCERNING, THAT'S HOW!
Snowshoe: You cook sandwiches on your face. Tell me that's not weird.
Aspect: That's different from sneaking into people's bedrooms and licking their faces!!!
Snowshoe: How about if you know what's good for you, you'll shut up?
Aspect: Fine. But you'll have to get some kind of mental health help soon.
  • There Is Only One Bed: Invoked by Romotan. He purposely gets Aspect and Frostbite a room with just one bed, to which Frostbite objects and both she and Aspect are embarrassed about while Romotan exits and tells them they can't have a refund. She does warm up to the idea, however, so when it's actually time to turn in for the night, Frostbite asks to cuddle even though Aspect offers to sleep on the floor.
  • Tomboy Princess: Snowshoe technically counts as a shogun's daughter. She fights very well, has a surprising potty mouth when she gets angrynote , wears men's armor when she joins Aspect on his quest, and quickly adjusts to being on the road and away from the palace.
