Webcomic / The Evolutions of Homosexuality and Suicide

Go To

A non-fiction comic by Øyvind Thorsby where he explains his theories on how homosexuality and suicide could have evolved. It is 7 pages long, and was posted in May 2019. It can be read here.

The theories are presented by a scientist character speaking to the reader, and sometimes to a second scientist. The discussed scenarios are depicted with comics of Stone Age people.

Contains examples of:

  • Bears Are Bad News: One pair of scenarios has a Stone Age couple being slaughtered by a bear in an over-the-top, bloody way.
  • Black Comedy: When the bearded scientist describes two hypothetical scenarios involving a Stone Age couple being killed by a bear, humor is derived from the couple's awareness of the scientist narrating their impending deaths, the sudden, over-the-top violence of said deaths, and the fact that in the second scenario, they clearly remember the events of the first and are not looking forward to repeating it.
Scientist (describing the first scenario): Then the mother and father of the first family get killed by a bear.
    Father: Say what now?
    Bear: [killing them] GROOAAR!
  • Camp Gay: Discussed, along with Butch Lesbian. The blond scientist wonders why many gay people seem to be gender non-conforming. The bearded scientist supposes that it makes it easier for them to find lovers by signaling their gayness to other gay people (this is assuming it's not cultural etc., which he admits could be the case too).
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: In a pair of scenarios, one Stone Age man confronts another, thinking him to be hitting on his girlfriend (he is not). In the first scenario, the first man is unconvinced of the truth and strikes the second man on the head, killing him. In the second scenario the second man claims he's gay and the first remembers him kissing guys before.
  • Driven to Suicide: The reason a genetic predisposition for suicidal impulses could have evolved is presented, with evidence. However it doesn't always result in actual suicides, just sometimes.
  • Fur Bikini: The Stone Age women wear two-piece outfits made from furs.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: A bear kills a man by ripping him in half.
  • Heart Symbol: A pair of gay men are depicted as having fallen in love by having them stand with their arms around each other, smiling, with a heart symbol over their heads.
  • Hereditary Homosexuality: A hypothesis for why homosexuality could evolve and be passed down genetically is given in the comic, with the mainstream one critiqued. A hypothesis is also given for bisexuality.
  • Instructional Dialogue: Dialogue between the two scientists is used to explore the theories, with the blond scientist asking questions and the bearded one answering.
  • Off with His Head!: A bear kills a man with a swipe of its claws that separates his head from his body.
  • Oh, Crap!: One pair of scenarios has a Stone Age couple being slaughtered by a bear. When the scene is reimagined for the second pass, the couple, anticipating their fate, have worried, wide-eyed expressions the whole time.
  • Opaque Nerd Glasses: The blond scientist wears round glasses that do not show his eyes.
  • Spoof Aesop: The bearded scientist explains that since a gay man might help both his own nieces and nephews as well as those of his lover's, on average he saves more children than an asexual man (who takes no lovers), thus more gene-carriers. He concludes: "So there you have it, gay love saves lives."
  • The Watson: The blond scientist asks questions so that the bearded scientist can explain his theories.
  • Wingding Eyes: Dead characters have X's for eyes.
