A Tale of Royal Growing Pains

Princess Bestie is a grayscale Magic Realism webcomic about a girl and her imaginary friend.

Blaine McNair has just started at a new high school. After moving halfway across the country. Due to her dad running off on her family. As you can imagine, she's not coping very well with the aforementioned events. So, to help her out a bit, her childhood imaginary friend, Princess Claire, comes back into her life.

The problem is that Claire is just as much a teenager as Blaine is, doesn't always have Blaine's best interests in mind, and usually isn't the best person to be taking advice from.

Think Calvin and Hobbes in high school.

This webcomic provides examples of:

  • All There in the Manual: The tags will reveal character's names before they are actually given in-comic. Blaine isn't named until page 4, and Claire's name isn't given until page 7. The trend continues with Nic and V.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When asked about worse places they could be, Claire's response includes jail, a swamp, and New Jersey.
  • Attention Whore: Claire, who will get Blaine's attention no matter where they are or what she happens to be doing.
  • Disappeared Dad: Blaine's dad disappearing is what kicks of the plot.
  • Skewed Priorities: Blaine's Spanish teacher seems more concerned that Blaine was using English in class than that she was yelling.
  • There Are No Therapists: Averted. Blaine's mom really wants Blaine to see one (justifiably, since she's been effectively having audiovisual hallucinations), but Blaine will have none of it. They seem to have a deal in place that as long as it's not effecting school, she won't force the issue.
  • Tomboyish Name: Blaine can be a girl's name, but it's far more commonly a guy's.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Claire, and to a lesser extent Blaine.
