Webcomic / My Girlfriend's A Hex Maniac

Go To

My Girlfriend's a Hex Maniac is a Pokémon-based romance comedy doujinshi written and drawn by Mgx0, being a fan-comic taking inspiration from Dating a Team Magma Grunt, another fan-made Pokémon comic with the same premise of the Player Character ending up in a relationship with a No Name Given trainer class. In this case, a Hex Maniac.

A year after their first meeting and after the events of Pokémon X and Y, the titular Hex Maniac (nicknamed Hexy by both the author and readers) finds herself getting caught up in a relationship with Calem after the initial chance encounter. Like the inspiration, the story is not much deeper beyond the separate story arcs per chapter and focus on humor and the relationship between the two.

You can find the series on Deviantart and Tapas.

This work features the following tropes:

  • Acrofatic: Tierno is still this with his Pokémon dance troop going on to compete in the finals and runs really fast after Calem due to him and Trevor thinking that Hexy's gonna do something bad to Calem.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: Not only does Hexy have more defined dimensions than how the Hex Maniac trainer class appeared in Pokémon X and Y, her spiral Wingding Eyes are Downplayed; having actual eye features and sheen to appear cuter.
  • Adaptational Badass: The Fairy Tale Girl seen beating Hexy during her Flashback montage at the start wields a Mega Gardevoir.
  • Author Appeal: Mgx0 has admitted to being a fan of Junji Ito and occasionally makes panels similar to Ito's work.
  • Bad Date: While Calem had a fun time on their first date at Restaurant Le Wow, the same couldn't be said for Hex. It went as exactly planned as far as Calem was concerned at the time, it's just that Hexy's adversity to Pokébattles due to constantly losing left her traumatized at everything happening, so much so she didn't even get to eat enough at the restaurant, with her suddenly passing out from starvation as she tried to chew out Calem for his battle hungry antics.
  • Berserk Button: "The House of Terror" being a poor excuse of a horror attraction is enough to set Hexy off to, in her words "end that bastard's whole career."
  • Blood Knight: When it comes to Pokémon battles, Calem can't get enough of them. Hex inverts this meanwhile, having an adversity to battles after getting burnt out from so many losses. Their date at Restaurant Le Wow, an establishment which features Pokémon battles as the price to eat there, establishes this: Calem is more than thrilled to fight against various trainers in an intense battle for the food while Hex meanwhile feels out of place and disillusioned with the setting she found herself in, ending up a sobbing mess by the time they could finally eat.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Shauna seems to think so, if her comment to Calem after she sees Hexy's rack is anything to go by.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: A montage of three of these is seen at the start with Stephen being beaten by a Punk Guy's Bisharp's Sucker Punch, a male Ace Trainer's Absol's Psycho Cut and a Fairy Tale Girl's Mega Gardevoir's Psychic.
  • Did Not Think This Through: During their first date, Hex thought that she could just drag Calem somewhere else so he would get disappointed and ditch him. Problem was, she couldn't think of a specific location to do so.
  • Freudian Slip: It's a bit of a Running Gag that Hex often lets her mouth on autopilot, sometimes going in the complete opposite direction of her thoughts.
    • In Chapter 1, she thinks to herself that she's just gonna refuse Calem's request to sit with her and get rid of him. Instead she says "Please have a seat" while gesturing in front of her. She mentally berates herself for acting nice.
    • In Chapter 2, after Calem apologizes for their Bad Date, a very annoyed Hex says that she doesn't mind him getting into battles, but that he should try to make it less intense next time. Hex realizes a bit too late that this means having a second date.
    • When Calem offers to take Hex back home if she doesn't want to go to the lab with him, she slips up and says out loud "I'LL GO WITH YOU, HONEY!". Cue Stunned Silence afterwards, followed by a delighted Shauna giving a cat smile.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: While she doesn't voice it out loud, Hexy's thoughts at the end of Chapter 4 reveal she has no clue what Calem sees in her to smile like he does.
  • Indirect Kiss: Hex seems to think about this trope when Shauna takes a sip of Calem's drink, and mentally wishes she took her mouth off the straw while glaring at her.
  • Irony: Shauna is completely fine with Calem being with Hexy and tries to grill him on what the state of their relationship is and how their dates are going...except as mentioned above in Indirect Kiss, Shauna is unintentionally interrupting said date and accidentally giving Hexy the impression that Shauna is deliberately in the way of the relationship.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Due to Adaptational Attractiveness, Hexy fulfills this a number of times, being considered quite beautiful. This is especially evident in Chapter 4, where Hexy goes through a multitude of outfits (and her underwear at one point) that shows off her figure shamelessly. It's Played for Laughs when Calem's other friend Shauna notices Hexy, and the first thing she focuses on is Hexy's ample chest size, much to her approval and Hexy's visible confusion.
  • Mythology Gag: After Tierno and Trevor experience a close encounter with Hex, viewed through their eyes as a ghost, Trevor recalls an urban legend involving an elevator before being interrupted, referring to the unexplained ghostly Hex Maniac encounter after leaving the elevator on a specific floor and building, who leaves the player with "You're not the one..."
  • Nightmare Face: Stephen's often showcased move Scary Face, which he uses in Hex's first meeting with Calem. He also makes great use of this during the old man's horror story, appearing as various forms of humanoid ghosts, a haunted doll, and an actual horde of faceless men the story ends on.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Naturally, Hexy being a ghostly-themed Pokémon trainer would mean she'd be obsessed with the horror genre. The same goes for her sole Pokémon Stephen the Haunter.
    • Hexy was so ecstatic to learn of the existence of "The House of Terror" through a promotional poster that when it all ends up inevitably disappointing her, she decides to take matters into her own hands and have him retell the story, to much greater effect.
    • The post chapter two page features Stephen having a laugh riot to a gruesome scene in a horror movie.
  • Romantic Spoonfeeding: Calem does it for Hexy during their date in Chapter 5.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Tempting Fate: When she finally resigns herself to go on a date with Calem, Hex thinks to herself that he probably doesn't have that much money on him. Right then, turns out he brought her to the Restaurant Le Wow. Cue Color Failure from Hex at the shock.
  • Troll: Stephen the Haunter, true to his nature as a mischievous Ghost-Type, likes to scare the living daylights out of people. Hex's first meeting with Calem is the result of Stephen pulling the Scary Face move on Calem.
