Go To

InSonicnia was a Sprite Comic based on Sonic the Hedgehog that began in 2004. It initially starts off as a comic similar to other Sonic sprite comics such as That's My Sonic!, but eventually gains its own storyline. It was initially hosted on a website called TheMysticalForestZone, but the website has since shut down. A return was teased in 2018, with the MFZ actually returning in mid-2021, though as of August 2022 the comic hasn't had anymore strips made. The comic can be read through there, and before that the comic was archived and can be read here, on a Spiritual Successor to The MFZ.

A retrospective on the comic can be watched here.

Tropes about inSonicnia

  • Beyond the Impossible: Adventures Robotnik cracks the indestructible Chaos Emeralds in half... by sitting on them.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Sonic steals Shadow's shoes and powers them with an Emerald, causing him to rocket into space and ditch the shoes to save himself. Some time later, a discussion between the Robotniks is interrupted when the shoes come flying in from space and get stopped cold by Adventures Robotnik's heft, delivering them the Emerald.
    • Link.
  • The Comically Serious: Shadow provides some comedy, in the form of acting serious and dramatic in the midst of the comic's farcical hijinks (see the Bozo Stone incident, which explicitly establishes that Shadow has no sense of humor).
  • Crossover: The Sonic cast's house turns out to be in the world of EarthBound (1994).
  • Cut Short: The story is this due to the comic being abandoned.
  • Harmless Villain: Eggman for the most part.
    • Adventures!Robotnik as well, but he can veer into Not-So-Harmless Villain on occasion, like how he was the one that figured out how to power the doomsday weapons in the Death Egg (thanks to being able to split Chaos Emeralds in two by sitting on them).
    • Monic and Muckles are the epitome of this. Mails not so much after Tails upgrades him.
  • Idiot Hero: Sonic, big time.
  • Non-Ironic Clown: Almost everyone in the city turns into this due to the Bozo Stone.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain:
    • After Tails upgrades him, Mails becomes a far bigger threat than before, mind-controlling Shadow to have him try to kill Sonic and Knuckles.
    • Monic and Muckles themselves become this after SatAM!Robotnik reprogram them to increase their kill settings.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Sonic and Shadow's first fight is depicted in an intentionally broken image embed. Apparently it was awesome, and the next comic has all the characters gushing about it.
  • Offscreen Villain Dark Matter: It's explained that Eggman has a commerce community website, EggBay, which funds his villainous schemes. Tails is a member because it's the only place he can get parts he needs.
  • Only Sane Man: Shadow and Sally are the ones with the most common sense out of the cast.
  • Orphaned Series: Hasn't been updated since 2011.
  • Running Gag:
    • Everyone mistakes Shadow for Sonic at least once.
    • Tails finding his alternate universe counterparts lame.
    • Sonic's hair constantly gets flipped up by one incident or another, perpetually leaving it stuck up in Super Sonic style.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Sonic's response to meeting Shadow is to mistake him for a doppelganger and try to solve the issue the Highlander way.
    • At the climax of one major story arc, Sonic wins the battle using an idea he got from watching FLCL.
  • Status Quo Is God: One of the comic's trademarks is that Sonic spends most of it with his quills stuck up like Super Sonic. Reverting back to normal from Super Sonic returns his hair to its regular style, but every time he does it, something happens shortly after to spike his hair back up.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: The very first gag of the comic is Sonic not wanting to be in a comic, because what usually happens is some kind of Self-Insert Mary Sue subjects him to The Worf Effect. Luckily, he's assured this won't be the case.
  • Toilet Humor: Discussed. With the Bozo Stone, first people would turn into clowns, then they would do clown things (juggling, tricks, etc.), and loss of... control of bowels. The reasoning is that people find both clowns and feces funny.
  • Villain Ball: Adventures Robotnik bungles a plan to kill Sonic when it was about to succeed, because in his obsession with doing the most despicable thing, he replaced an unlimited energy generator with a diesel engine because diesel would hurt the environment.
