Hangin Out is a Sonic the Hedgehog-based Slice of Life webcomic by The Hydroxian.

The comic is set seemingly several years into the future from the games; Eggman has finally been dealt with, once and for all, and the story opens Metal Sonic arriving at Amy's home to hang out. From there the comic quickly grows into its own world demonstrating how things have changed over the years and what has led the two to grow such an Odd Friendship.

The comic is notable for its stellar art, with particular use of dynamic angles and colours, as well as interesting re-interpretations of the various cast members.

The first page of the comic can be found here.

This webcomic contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass: Several examples.
    • Amy was plenty badass in the games, but here her use of tarot cards has been upgraded to outright magic. In particular, she has a new special move called Collision Chaos that can apply different affects to objects depending on the cards used.
    • Tikal, big time. In the games she's a total non-combatant; here she's a terrifying warrior outright feared by several characters, to the point GUN refuse to go after the Chaos Emerald she's guarding.
    • Orbot has taken over what remains of Eggman's empire, reworked it into a force of good known as the Auto-Empire, and is no slouch in combat when using his Dragoon body.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Zero, who not only seemingly has no Phantom Ruby powers but is intimidated to tears by Amy's Trash Talk. That said, he does threaten to stab Amy if she ever hurt Buddy, so there's that.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: All over the place:
    • Metal Sonic is still very short-tempered and quick to violence. But he's a much gentler and more friendly individual. In-universe, it's explained as him realising this is the reason Sonic has always one-upped him.
    • Tikal is probably the most extreme example; instead of the gentle pacifist she is in canon, while she's still on the heroes side this Tikal is an absolute juggernaut who even admits she revels in battle, insulting Metal to his face to goad him into a fight.
    • Infinite a.k.a. Zero, who is best friends with Buddy and easily intimidated by the other characters.
    • The Rookie a.k.a. Buddy/Undefined is friends with Zero, but also a much colder and more aggressive character, threatening anyone who upsets Buddy while speaking in a Creepy Monotone. It's implied by one of his lines he's neurodivergent.
    • Chaos 0 a.k.a. Chassidy "Chasey" Destruere is Rouge's partner and seems to have taken on some of her personality traits, being confident, playful, flirty and feminine.
  • Ambiguous Gender Identity: Chasey, the comic's take on Chaos 0, is a much more feminine character than portrayed in canon, being sassy and playful much like Rouge, as well as portrayed with eyelashes and high heels. That said Chaos was never portrayed with gender, so it's currently unknown if Chasey is female, male but effeminate, trans or non-binary.
  • The Atoner: Orbot claims that the entire purpose of the Auto-Empire is to make amends for his creator's actions.
  • Bilingual Bonus: "Kim-En," used by both Tikal and Chasey as a battle cry. According to the author's notes, it means "die" in Yucatec Maya.
  • The Cameo: At the arcade, Amy's initial opponent at pin-pong is the Paddler. Additionally, Bean makes an appearance during Sonic and Metal's laser tag game.
  • Chainsaw Good: Tikal of all characters uses a chainsaw to mutilate Metal Sonic in their fight. Judging by some comments made during and afterwards, this is a common thing for her.
  • The Dreaded: Tikal. In fact, Shadow outright mentions that GUN won't make a move on a Chaos Emerald that's sitting out in the open due to the knowledge that she's guarding it.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Tikal, despite her much more... aggressive tendencies, will still try to settle matters with words before turning to violence. But when words fail...
The Hydroxian: Tikal made the mistake of giving peace a chance 4000 years ago. she doesn’t like repeating mistakes.
  • Mythology Gag: Amy and Tikal at one point discuss a game called Mr. Needlemouse Adventure, which in-universe is acknowledged to use their likenesses.
    • Tikal's trump card during her battle with Metal; the GUN truck.

  • Odd Friendship: Amy and Metal Sonic, if only because the latter kidnapped the former and tried to kill her friends on multiple occasions. However, it's also established that the two are similar.
  • Thinking Up Portals: Tikal has acquired this ability over the years, using them in battle to teleport around opponents, summon and drop the GUN truck on them, or to meet up with Amy.
