Webcomic / Hallow Rain Forest

Go To

Hallow Rain Forest is a crossover fanfic Webcomic between Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest and Rain World by Peculiarperennial on Tumblr.

The Knight/Ghost, Ori, and the Survivor form an unlikely friendship with Sein as their guide.

The comic is unfinished and at the moment of writing this only has a handful of chapters so the plot is not defined enough for a better description.

Hallow Rain Forest contains examples of:

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: While Five pebbles hasn't been shown as of writing, if canon is anything to go by, this trope applies.

  • After the End: It's based off of Hollow Knight, Ori, and Rain World. what else do you expect?

  • Ambiguous Situation:
    • As of writing this, it's unclear what Ghost's motivations are. Probably like canon, they forgot about their past and is just wandering.
    • It can be assumed the Survivor wants to find their family like canon.
    • Sein calls our trio three children of the spirit tree. Is this to be taken literally? If so how did the Spirit tree give birth to a slugcat and a bug?
      • If it's a metaphor, why does the metaphor apply to Ghost and The Survivor?
    • The Survivor finds Sein in a dormant state. How did the Survivor find Sein?
      • How did Sein end up in this state? Presumably Rakuro did it, but we can't be sure.
      • How did Sein wake up? She woke up after Rakuro screamed, but why would Rakuro wake up her enemy?
    • What exactly will Rakuro do? We haven't seen the infection yet. Will her motivations be mixed between Kuro's and The Radiance?
    • Why was Naru not waken up when Sein awakened? As well as when she talked. Although she could just be a heavy sleeper and the author did say Naru was getting weak.

  • Ambiguous Gender: The main three protagonists either don't have gender, or it's left undefined.

  • Anti-Hero: If canon is anything to go by, this will apply to Hornet.

  • Big Bad: Rakuro, a fusion between Kuro and The Radiance. There's only a few panels of her as of now, but the author said she would be the main antagonist.

  • Big Eater:
    • While not as much as Gourmand, The Survivor is shown to love eating a little too much.
    • As of now they only show up for one panel, but Gourmand still deserves a mention.

  • Foreshadowing:
    • Hornet is shown in two panels in the fifth chapter before her actual appearance, with Ghost noticing her once.

  • Fusion Fic: The settings of the respective three games have been merged.
    • The bone-crushing rain of Rain World effects most areas of the setting and the characters treat it as normal and hide from it one way or another. However when it starts raining in the first chapter, Ghost does not show shock unlike The Survivor. Then again, Ghost generally more emotionless than the other characters.
    • Cycles are used to measure time (Cycles in Rain World are also used for measuring time).
    • Kuro and The Radiance has been merged into Rakuro.

  • Hammerspace: Ghost uses their void to store things. They use this ability to impress Ori and The Survivor. The author mistakenly assumes Ori doesn't have a hammerspace, but the keystones and mapstones just get absorbed into Ori and let out when they need them. This is further used in will of the wisps.
  • The Heart: When Ghost tries to attack someone, Ori stops them. Ori is even kind enough to let Ghost and The Survivor (who were technically strangers) into their home and give them their food. Ori was willing to risk their life for them even though they just met.

  • Kid Hero: Ghost, Ori, and the Survivor are young children. That doesn't stop them from being heroes. If canon is anything to go by, Ghost is the oldest of them.

  • Organic Technology: The comic is based off of Rain World. And the slugcat species is implied to have descended from a pipe-cleaning slug.

  • Power of the Void: Ghost is born of void. Void is very important to the lore of Rain World with the whole breaking the cycle. The Fusion fic creates some interesting lore implications for the void. Will the author fuse the voids from both games along with their properties? If so, this would bring up questions about Ghost.

  • Science Fantasy: Rain World is technically a science fantasy due to having technology from the ancients and iterators, as well as magic in the form of the void fluid, the cycle & karma. Ori & Hollow Knight were already fantasies. So with the fusion it stays a science fantasy.

  • The Speechless: Ghost has no voice to cry suffering, while Ori and the Survivor don't speak for some reason.

  • Ungrateful Bastard:
    • Ghost saves the Survivor from getting eaten by a lizard. How does the Survivor repay them? By stealing their nail with little hesitation. The Survivor even got mad at Ghost for reclaiming what was theirs.
    • Ghost falls victim to this trope as well. When Hornet saves Ghost and their friends from a king vulture, out of nowhere, Ghost wants to fight her.
