Beginning in 2014, ComicFury's Crossover Exchanges are a regular community event in which participents give and receive crossover art or comics.
One person will designate themselves the host, and create a signup thread, after which it will be their job to assign each participant a random comic to draw art for. Each exchange will also usually have a collaborative image serving as it's 'cover,' and a short intro comic by the host as well as a closing image or comic. The Halloween Exchange 2018 introduced the idea of multi page collab comics telling a short story as an intro.
A typical year of exchanges includes:
- Crossover Exchange IN LOVE- A valentines exchange and the only exchange to always be hosted by the same person. 2019 broke the pattern with a blind date exchange instead of the usual title, but it was still hosted by HeSerpenty.
- Summer Exchange: A bit of a wildcard. Whilst usually summer themed, exchanges held during the summer months have the potential to be anything, from a pirate prom to a ComicFury themed convention.
- Halloween Exchange
- Christmas Exchange
ComicFury Crossover Exchange provides examples of the following tropes:
- Alternate Universe: What most exchange pieces are assumed to be, unless interdimensional travel is involved or one or both of the artists involved declare it canon.
- Blind Date: The theme of the 2018 Blind Date Exchange. (Repeated for 2019.)
- Callback: Oh, yes.
- The Adventures Of Sir Power - Cryptida 2019 Christmas crossover recalls the Cryptida - TAoSP 2019 Halloween Crossover.
- The Villain of Scary Monsters, Super Creeps was a fish man from the previous year's COSMOS - Court of Roses crossover.
- Ariane Eldar remembers meeting Tarik in the 2019 Blind Date Exchange, a meeting that happened in the 2018 Halloween Crossover Collab.
- Puarani also remembers meeting Tarik in the The Wide Ocean - Cryptida exchange. The two previously met in the 2018 Halloween Crossover Collab.
- Cosplay: Done during Halloween and Furycon.
- Crack Pairing: Many have formed over the years, some of them appearing more than once. They're most common in valentines exchanges.
- Fake Crossover: Unless otherwise stated by one of the creators.
- The Krampus: Has appeared in a few Christmas Crossover Exchange strips. Apparently, he and Fantomah dated for a bit.
- Massive Multiplayer Crossover: While the strips themselves usually contain only two comics, some contain cameos from other comics.
- Also, the intro comics for the 2018 Halloween and Christmas Exchanges.
- Monster Mash: The Strangest Coven - COSMOS 2019 Halloween crossover features the Cosmosians turned into monsters, including a were-cat, Frankenstein's Monster, Mad Scientist, Medusa, a Jack-o' Lantern, and a Robby the Robot Expy, led by a fish cultist from the previous year's COSMOS exchange.
- Scenery Censor: Inevitably in use when Kaza and Gwenna are around.
- Show Within a Show: Well, show within a comic, in the case of 2018's Christmas Show exchange.
- Shout-Out: With the sheer amount of contributors, a few references were inevitable.
- Microraptor parodies Jaws in the 2019 The Wide Ocean - Cryptida exchange, with Puarani as the shark.
- The 2018 Halloween Crossover Exchange cover's title is in the Stranger Things font.
- The 2018 Christmas intro comic is a Whole-Plot Reference to A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong.
- Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Sometimes, people don't seem to be bothered by the appearances of superheroes, Cosmosians, monsters, nudists, or domesticated kakapos as one would expect.
- Weird Crossover: Inevitable, given that the pairings are randomized.
- Yet Another Christmas Carol: Performed as a play for the 2018 Big Christmas Show Exchange.
