Buni is a comic by Ryan Pagelow about a highly optimistic bunny who is a constant victim of a world who hates him. He has a love interest who doesn't love him back, his father is an escaped convict, and his house is constantly raided by lawn gnomes.
Not to be confused with Phil Buni. See the archive here. It updates every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, as well as Sundays on Webtoon.com.
Tropes:
- Always a Bigger Fish: In this strip.
- Animate Inanimate Object: The occasional comic strip features this, which can be virtually anything. Examples include food, plants, abstract things such as rainbows and hearts, and BuniDad's coffee pot.
- Broken Ace: Buni's dog.
- April Fools' Day: Bunigirl has the misfortune of asking Buni to come over on this date.
- Bears Are Bad News: Bears make up a lot of the shady characters in the comic.
- Cement Shoes: How a pair of mafia bears dispose of their victim here.
- Coloring in the World: The titular rabbit decides one day to bring Technicolor to the drab black-and-white world of the bears. Unfortunately, instead of causing them to become joyfully rapturous from the sight, they instead all Go Mad from the Revelation, with the final panel having a Hazmat team busily "disinfecting" the entire scene of all those toxic colors, subverting the trope.
- Cosmic Plaything: Sometimes literally, when God himself comes down to mess with the titular character.
- Crapsack World: There are hints of this, but for the most part Buni is completely oblivious to it.
- Died in Your Arms Tonight: Buni accidentally pierces a squirrel through the heart while he's practicing his aim with Cupid's love arrows. The arrow makes the squirrel profess its love to Buni before dying.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Take only one candy from the bowl on Halloween. Or your zombie costume will become much more... realistic.
- Downer Ending: ALL THE TIME.
- The "Fun" in "Funeral": Buni has been to a fair share of funerals, and there's always a quirk of black humor at each one.
- Funny Animal: Pretty much the whole cast.
- High-Pressure Blood: When a rat wanders into a trap, your room will be painted red.
- Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Buni's dog has, on many occasions, faithfully defended Buni from the gnomes, prevented several misfortunes, and even tried to introduce good fortune. Also, he can drive.
- Love Hurts: The most frequently recurring theme of the comic.
- Ludicrous Gibs: Occasionally.
- Meet The Meat: Several examples. A fresh sushi bar with an all fish staff, a steak restaurant with a cow waiter, cotton candy made out of unicorn fur and a pig selling hot dogs, to name a few.
- Monster Clown: The most frequently recurring clown isn't exactly "monstrous" in the traditional sense, but he's obviously a very unpleasant criminal.
- Nameless Narrative: The four named characters are Buni, BuniDad, Dogi, and BuniGirl. No other characters are named, and if not for Word of God three of these four would be unknown as well.
- Negative Continuity: Since Buni dies in the occasional strip.
- No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Buni's attempts to help people often make his own life worse.
- Non-Ironic Clown: There's actually quite a few of them.
- Pictorial Speech-Bubble: All characters' preferred way of speaking.
- Radiation-Induced Superpowers: Averted. When you drink a barrel of toxic waste, you die.
- Shout-Out: To King Kong here.
- Stalker with a Crush: Buni to Bunigirl. Also the unnamed "Geekbunigirl" to Buni.
- Testosterone Poisoning: Buni's dog drinks SNAKE VENOM for breakfast!
- They Killed Kenny Again: Buni has died many times, only to be perfectly fine the next day. Well, as fine as someone with Buni's life can be.
- Unrequited Love: Poor, poor Buni... Bunigirl will never love him.
- Wide-Eyed Idealist: Buni remains optimistic about his life, even in the face of the most dire tragedies.
