Webcomic / A Game of Roleplay

Go To

A RPG Screencap Webcomic or Campaign Comic which follows the events of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series using screen grabs from HBO's Game of Thrones TV series. It follows the same style as Darths & Droids, right down to the yellow text boxes for the Game Master. It is currently published here on smackjeeves and includes a "list of other comics in this style" made redundant by TV Tropes' list of Campaign Comics. The author aims to create comics for the entire first season, an ambitious task considering there are 10 hours of footage to be transferred into webcomic form. There is a spin-off, A Song of Fire and More Fire, featuring a different group of players and focusing on events in the east.

A Game of Roleplay provides examples of the following tropes:

  • AnyoneCanDie: By the end of the first chapter, four main characters have been killed including Will & Nick's characters (Will's character manages to die twice) and a major quest giver.
  • Adaptational Villainy: The Starks, all of whom are Ax-Crazy and/or Machiavellian schemers
  • AxCrazy: Bran and Eddard.
  • Affectionate Parody
  • Backup Twin: Geoffrey Baratheon is killed, but happens to have a twin called Joffrey.
  • Beard of Evil: Lampshaded by Sean, who assumes that anyone who's confident enough in a characters morality to give them a goatee, wouldn't be cliched enough to have them turn out to be evil.
  • Calvinball: The System used by the players is roughly based on D&D, but is writtern by someone with very little experiance playing. As the series is mostly non-combat focused this is OK as it means there is more scope for rules focusing on diplomacy and persuasion.
  • CampaignComic: The style is heavily reminiscent of both Darths & Droids and DM of the Rings.
  • Doorstopper: The GM's notes are described as being "larger than a cat"
  • Easily Forgiven: King Robert quickly forgives the Starks for the murder of his son.
  • Grim Up North: As with the source material, the comic places a strong emphasis on how bleak the North is.
  • Mad Libs Catchphrase: Jon starts every sentence with "I am confused" or "I am worried"
  • Manipulative Bastard: In addition to the series regular Bastards Varys & Littlefinger, the Game-Master clearly has a very precise idea of where the game is going and they're going to do anything they can to force it.
  • Mythology Gag: One of the reasons why Sean refuses to play as Targaryens is that they are on an unmapped continent. Early books in the series featured only maps of Westeros.
  • No Name Given: The Game Master has a mysterious, unidentified past, backstory and gender (Word of God says this is a result of a desperate attempt to increse diversity without actually having to write any believable female characters)
  • Remember the New Guy?: How Sansa is introduced
Will: I've found her cubs. Five of them, one for each of the Stark kids.
GM: Ooh I like that, except there are four four Stark children.
Sean: That's fine. One for me too.
GM: You suddenly remember your sister Sansa who has existed the whole time and was not just made up as a plot conveniance.
