Touhou Igyoukyo title card

"They say there are two pillars that make up the Dark Fic "Mental Collapse" genre of Touhou fan works. Those two are Koi-Doki and Grotesque Land Story."
General opinion about Touhou Igyoukyo

Touhou Igyoukyo ~ Grotesque Land Story (or simply called "Grotesque Land Story") is a Web Original series of videos made by Nico Nico Douga user Sushi Hero Toro (who also owns a YouTube channel), telling a harrowing and violent story about Gensokyo folks being hunted by mysteriously mutated creatures and trying their best to survive. Set in an "alternate" Gensokyo, it's notable for portraying a number of characters fighting many mysterious mutated creatures in more violent ways than danmaku duels in Canon. It is well-known in the Japanese Touhou fandom for its Crapsaccharine World depiction of Gensokyo, enough to draw comparison with Koishi Komeiji's Heart-Throbbing Adventure. The first video of the series was uploaded in 2014, and it is still ongoing.

The Japanese version can be watched on Youtube and Nico Nico Douga.

Some other Youtube channel users are making attempts to translate this fanfiction into English language, though it hasn't been completed yet. You can begin watching the translated version here:

This video series provides examples of:

  • Anachronic Order: This story currently has no fixed chronological order. While readers can first assume that the story starts with the Prologue, further reading proves that the incident involving the fairies and Variant creatures has already begun before (or at least happen at the same time with) the appearance of Variant Reimu at the Hakurei Shrine frontyard.
  • Anyone Can Die: Being a route's protagonist is no guarantee of safety, as Sakuya, Patchouli, Meiling, and The Three Mischievous Fairies find out the hard way.
  • BFS: Rumia's Superpowered Evil Side has this as her weapon of choice.
  • Big Bad: So far, the Demon King Variant Remilia is shaping up to be this, with Gensokyo 6 as just another conquest for her.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Letty Whiterock comes just a nick in the time to rescue Cirno after the latter exhausts herself. Yuuka Kazami also qualifies when she rescues Mystia and Rumia, even though she probably does not consider herself a good guy.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Variants of The Mischievous Fairies. Variant Luna Child is a blonde, Variant Star Sapphire is a brunette, and Variant Sunny Milk is a redhead. While other variants either work individually or just randomly gang up against a smaller number of victims, this trio has arguably the best teamwork compared to other variants.
  • Determinator: Fujiwara no Mokou faces some of the strongest variant creatures and never loses her resolve. Her immortality may plays a big role in it, but take note how Kaguya, a fellow Hourai immortal like Mokou, fails to show as much struggle and resolve when Variant Reisen abducts her.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The gang of Lotus Land Story variants:
    • Choleric: Variant Yuuka. She is forceful, domineering, aware of her overwhelming power and is not afraid to exercise it against smaller victims.
    • Sanguine: Variant Orange. She is a bit reckless just like her original PC-98 counterpart.
    • Melancholic: Variant Kurumi. She is quiet, reserved, and rarely shows any sign of emotion.
    • Phlegmatic: Variant Elly. She is obedient and Unlike Variant Orange and Variant Kurumi who are simply acquaintances of Variant Yuuka, Variant Elly is an actual subordinate of Variant Yuuka.
  • Girls with Guns: Koakuma uses many guns ranging from simple handgun to anti-armor heavy weaponry.
  • Gratuitous English / You No Take Candle: Variant counterparts of the Moon Rabbits talk in this manner, WITH ALL CAPITAL LETTERS!
  • Green Thumb: Yuuka Kazami. Both the original self and her variant counterpart have this ability.
  • Invisibility: Sunny Milk's trademark skill.
  • Kill It with Fire: Variant Mokou's ability burns Bamboo Forest of the Lost to the ground as if she is raising hell on Earth.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Many Gensokyo folks, when their backs are against the wall, will turn into formidable opponents for variant creatures.
    • Marisa the closet Blood Knight goes full laser-toting on variants who are ambushing her at home.
    • Remilia after knowing her opponents are not obeying spell card rules, goes full berserk in a messy way.
    • Yuuka "Sleeping Terror" Kazami, when her flowers or her friends are in danger, or when she knows her opponents are major threat, woe to all who provoke Yuuka's wrath.
  • Living Shadow: Variant Elly, and the silhouettes within her shadow world.
  • Mirror Match: Yuuka Kazami vs Variant Yuuka.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Variant Elly, with each of her limbs wielding Sinister Scythes.
  • Off With Her Head!: How Daiyousei dies, she takes the attack that was supposed to hit Lily White.
  • Original Character: Other than official Touhou characters and their variant counterparts, this series also has some OC made by the author. Bacca the 13th Knight, Tina "Tee" Flavor, and Vinca are some relevant names.
  • Sanity Slippage: Alice, all throughout her route... though given her flashbacks to Makai, one has to wonder how sane she ever was.
    • Losing Kaguya's left Eirin a haggard shell of her former self... and desperate enough to make a deal with the devil to bring her back.
      • Rin seems to have suffered this too... at least, one would hope she didn't already have what looks like a mix of Frankenstein's lab and a torture chamber before the bodies started piling up.
  • Sole Survivor: Not counting the fairy maids in Scarlet Devil Mansions, Cirno is the only survivor of wild fairies in Gensokyo, assuming Clownpiece and Eternity Larva do not exist in this story.
  • Stealthy Teleportation: Daiyousei, both her real fairy version and her mutated variant are capable of this. This teleportation ends up causing a lot of troubles for surviving Gensokyo folks.
  • Super Mode: Meiling has one activated by taking the star off her hat. She becomes a partial dragon, stronger and faster to the point of being able to keep up with Variant Marisa in a fight. Sadly, the time it lasts is far too short..
  • Superpowered Evil Side: When Rumia falls into despair and her ribbon comes off, she turns into a form the fandom knows as "EX-Rumia", capable of giving Variant Yuuka a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. She has to be calmed down afterward, luckily the original Yuuka can just do that.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: After witnessing so many death in front of her and properly grieving, Cirno proceeds to reach her "Awakened" state and manages to defeat many mutated variants on her own.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Yuuka Kazami the true user of "Master Spark", and Marisa Kirisame who copied it and put her own quirk to make her own version of it.
  • Wham Shot:
    • Variant Reimu kills Suika, in the first episode nonetheless!
      • Suika is revealed to be alive in the Three Mischievous Fairies arc.
    • Yukari Yakumo hugs Variant Reimu in a loving manner, implying she knows this creature and approves her existence. Or worse, this Yukari is probably a variant too!
    • Yuuka arc contains many of this:
    • Hong Meiling arc reveals that:
      • Meiling can transform into half-dragon form which multiplies her strength and speed.
      • Also, Variant Marisa's Power Copying is much more powerful than the real Marisa; While Marisa can "steal skills", she has to practice it multiple times and use her own quirks since she cannot do exactly the same thing as the original owners. Meanwhile, Variant Marisa can copy things like Remilia's Gungnir lance and Sakuya's Time Stands Still ability exactly the same as the original owners from A to Z.
    • Mokou arc reveals that variant counterparts of Mokou and Kaguya are wrecking havoc around Gensokyo, That is, if they are not too busy fighting each other, though.
  • Word-Salad Horror: A sign of a curse from Variant Sanae taking effect. Variant Minoriko and Koakuma both end up on the receiving end, madly rambling what sounds like a mixture of their normal speech and outside world news reports.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Alice did this to become an adult.
  • Worthy Opponent: Hong Meiling is this for Variant Marisa post-mortem.
  • Yandere: Alice will do anything to be with Marisa. Even if it means stabbing an infant to death...
