The Vampire Diaries: A Darker Truth is a web mini series. It follows Jason Harris as he attempts to get revenge on the vampire who killed his sister, which he believes to be Stefan Salvatore. The four episode series is a prequal leading up to the major events of the pilot of The Vampire Diaries and was released on CWTV.com between August 25th and September 8th of 2009.
Provides examples of the following tropes:
- Big Bad: Damon is the vampire who killed Jason's sister and the vampire who is terrorizing the town in the flash forwards.
- Flash Forward: The show regularly cuts back to the events after Vickie's attack in the pilot which takes place after this show.
- The Hero Dies: Jason is the lead character who is trying to find the vampire who killed his sister. The last episode has him killed by that same vampire- Damon.
- Prequel: The show is supposed to be a prequel to the events of the first episode of the main show. It shows what happened when Damon first arrived in Mystic Falls and leads up to Vickie's attack in the pilot.
- The Reveal: The final episode reveals that it was Damon and not Stefan who killed Jason's sister, Joanne.
- You Killed My Father: Or rather sister in this case, but Jason is out to kill Stefan because he believes Stefan killed his sister. It's eventually revealed that it was Damon and not Stefan who killed his sister.
